Job Description
Job Title: Clinical Scientist (Clinical Engineering)

Band: 7

Reports to: Clinical engineering team leader

Responsible to:Head of Clinical Engineering

Base/Department:Clinical Engineering R&D, Medical Physics Department, Salford


Royal Hospital

Main purpose of the job:

Develop innovative engineering solutions according to clinical and research needs, biased
towards clinical computing and software solutions. Provide specialist advice to users in the
safe use of medical devices and assist in the associated risk management. Carry out
regular quality assurance performance testing of photodermatology therapeutic and
diagnostic equipment.

Main Tasks &Overview of Responsibilities


The post is within the Clinical Engineering Research and Development team of the
Medical Physics Department, Salford Royal Hospital. This team of specialist engineers
and technologists supports both clinical service development and clinical research
through innovative clinical engineering and a varied mix of hardware, software and
system-integration solutions. Strong collaborative relationships exist with key clinical
and clinical research groups, local universities, and industry supplier.

The research and development work of the post-holder will be biased towards clinical
computing and software solutions for clinical measurement, data capture, and data
visualisation, increasingly needed to provide state-of-the-art integrated care systems
and tele-health.

With the others in the team, the post holder's specialist expertise will also contribute as
necessary to the wider medical equipment management and user-support roles of the
Medical Physics Department. In particular the post-holder will be responsible for
carrying out a regular programme of quality assurance performance testing of
photodermatology therapeutic and diagnostic equipment.
Communications and Relationships

 Communicate complex clinical engineering and technical advice to users of


the service.
 Develop highly complex software solutions by translating researcher and
clinician bespoke needs.
 Converting complex clinical processes into technical solutions.
 Working with universities and research supplier, converting complex clinical
information into a simplified engineering solution.
 Discuss and offer advice on complex technical matters to staff.
 Communicate with users of medical equipment on safety and risk.

Analytical and Judgmental Skills

 Complex measurement and interpretation of results.


 Analysis, interpretation and comparison of information and data to develop
bespoke software solutions.
 Data entry of analysis of results when testing medical equipment.
 Carry out performance measurement analysis, assess clinical impact, advise
service users and produce reports
 Maintain clinical diagnostic accuracy and clinical engineering design and
construction accuracy through appropriate quality assurance procedures.

Responsibility for Patient Care


 Provide a specialist clinical engineering service which includes providing
scientific knowledge and advice on medical devices and their application in
clinical practice.
 Assure a safe and effective photodermatology diagnosis and treatment
through quality assurance testing and expert advice to service users
 Maintain the calibration chain to support photodermatology quality assurance
programme
 Calibrate, service and repair medical equipment which is used for patient
care.
 Assist users of medical equipment to obtain optimum and safe use of devices
used for patient care.
 Assist in the monitoring and investigation of incidents involving medical
devices used for patient care.

Responsibility for Policy/Service Development


 Identify and develop research ideas in the area of innovative clinical
engineering and clinical service development, ensuring that proper project
management and cutting-edge engineering solutions result.
 Take an active role in the development of new clinical measurement
techniques. Working with clinical teams and industry.

Responsibilities for Financial and Physical Resources


 Advise users on purchase of consumables and scoping out aids to support
research.
 Responsible for managing the assets assigned to this group of staff.
 Liaise with suppliers on technical queries over invoices for work done or
goods provided.
 Responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of Trust assets.
 Scope out costs for bespoke research and development projects, advising
clinical teams on typical costs.
 Support clinical teams and managers with costing for research grants. This
may include applications for internal and external funding applications.

Responsibilities for Human Resources

 Responsible for training and development of junior staff in this group, this
includes induction and assistance with competency sign off.
 Responsible for assigning and monitoring tasks assigned to the staff in this
group.
 Training and assessing staff in safe clinical engineering and device
construction standards, following good manufacturing standards and
departmental ISO 9001 procedures.
 Ensure that the required standards of work and performance are monitored
and departmental KPI are reported to the Head of Clinical Engineering.

Responsibility for Information Resources

 Data entry of results and testing on medical equipment into an equipment


management database
 Ensure clinical engineering design procedures conforms to departmental ISO
9001 quality management system.
 Maintain photodermatology diagnostic and therapeutic accuracy through
appropriate quality management procedures.
 Compile evidence master records of design and research documentation,
ensuring full traceability at all times.

Responsibilities for Research and Development

 Identify and develop research ideas in the area of innovative clinical


engineering and clinical service development, ensuring that proper project
management and cutting-edge engineering solutions result.
 Support users of research equipment, to ensure patient and user safety,
whilst maintaining compliance to external regulatory requirements.
 Offer advice and support to the Trust’s R&D directorate.
 Takes an active role in the development of new clinical measurement
techniques.
 Support clinicians and researchers with bespoke solutions both software and
hardware. Maintain evidence portfolio for all design concepts.
 Maintain all Intellectual property rights of the care organisation when working
on research work with outside organisations.

 Works within Trusts policies and local departmental policies and protocols
ensuring these policies are interpreted and necessary steps are introduced so
they are achieved.
 Makes decisions on medical equipment safety and use, advising other users
as necessary.

cutting edge technology in design solutions.

 Provide specialist advice and direction to all users of medical devices and
staff in this team.
 Agree timescales and deadlines with users for completion of tasks reporting
any variation to the Head of Clinical Engineering.
 Interact with colleagues internally and with outside suppliers / agencies.
 Work with clinical, research, R&D directorate and suppliers as necessary to
develop innovation solutions.

step in the process and all potential and actual risk are documented.

processes.

department/ward/clinical team is reducing hospital acquired infection. You will
ensure that you and your staff comply with the Trust’s policies on infection,

required to maintain competence to execute the Trusts policies on infection,
prevention and control. You have a responsibility to bring deficiencies in the
deployment of such policies to the attention of your line manager.

Electronic Patient Record


To be included in all Clinical job descriptions

Salford Royal uses an Electronic Patient Record (EPR). All Clinicians must use EPR
as the primary patient record. It supports delivery of Safe, Clean and Personal
patient care. Paper is used only for clinical record components (e.g. fluid charts) that
do not at present have an EPR replacement.

The majority of clinical documentation is entered directly on the EPR including health
issues, case histories and continuation notes, condition specific structured records
and risk assessments. EPR also provides systems for prescribing, requesting most
tests and some services, and for viewing results, a local integrated record and
correspondence.

Access to this comprehensive EPR is via a unique login and password. All Clinicians
working at Salford Royal must receive EPR training.

Code of Conduct
Professional staff that have a national Code of Conduct are expected to adhere to
that Code and failure to do so could result in disciplinary action being taken. Staff
who do not have a regulatory body are expected to conduct themselves in a
professional manner and in line with the Trust values and polices are all time.
