CALL FOR PAPERS

1
The research project Net-Rom Early Marriage between Dynamism of Social Network
and Legal Autonomy: The case of transnational Romanian Roma has been funded by the
UE Research and Innovation Programme Horizon 2020 under the Contract Marie
Sklodowska-Curie nr. 794108.
Call for papers for the Conference
"CONFLICT RESOLUTIONS AND ROMANI PEOPLE.
AN INTERDISCIPLINARY INSIGHT"

Conflicts and their resolution strategies have always been the focus
of so-called Romani studies. Especially anthropology of Romani groups
has been dealing with the topic from different perspectives, also in light of
theories and methodologies developed by anthropology of law. Initially,
legal anthropologists studied the Roma’s conflict resolution strategies
according to a substantial approach, i.e. by regarding them as segments
of unwritten codes (better known as customary laws) that are
independent from standard state law. Further anthropological reflection
concerning inner conflict resolutions has subsequently enriched the above
approach by trying to draw a line between legal/formal and extra-
legal/informal strategies. Lastly, post-colonial interpretation of
intercultural conflicts has questioned this phenomenon and shifted the
focus from the legal anthropological level of inner norms to the political
level of public recognition of non-state legal systems.

This conference reopens the historical debate on conflict resolution

strategies developed by Roma adding new and important contributions
concerning key aspects of the phenomenon. It particularly regards the
subtle continuum of possible strategies and their multiple levels of
formality and informality. By looking at the relationships that exist within
Roma communities, between different Roma groups and between Roma
and non-Roma societies, the conference also offers new crucial thoughts
on how to answer questions that are still pending for anthropology of
Romani groups and for anthropology of law: what pragmatically is the
resolution of an interindividual conflict? How does an interindividual
conflict articulate with inter-community conflicts? How and how much do
diverse political ideologies affect such conflicts?

The conference provides the opportunity to present researches on

conflict resolution strategies developed by Roma in relation to all fields of
social life (family relationships, professional relationships, individual or
inter-group relationships, power and gender relationships, etc.).
Contributions that attempt to outline the often subtle and hardly visible
boundaries between “legal” and “extra-legal” solutions, either in non-state
or state legal orders, will be particularly appreciated, as will contributions
that aim to emphasize influences between diverse legal systems. The
selection process also rewards researches that enhance interdisciplinary
approaches based on the combination of diverse theorical perspectives
and empirical methodologies (ethnography, archival research, judicial
case studies, etc.).

All presentations, however, should be able to offer innovative

analysis regarding at least one of the following thematic areas:

1. Management and resolutions of Roma inner interindividual

conflicts (e.g. conflicts managed according to “formal” methods, such as

resorting to kris; conflicts managed according to “informal” social

strategies, such as avoidance or ostracism).

2. Management and resolutions of interindividual conflicts between

Roma and non-Roma (e.g. how do Roma negotiate with non-Roma? Do
domination forms (historically structured by anti-gypsyism) affect
interindividual conflicts between Roma and non-Roma as well as individual
protection of Roma by state law?)

3. Collective conflicts (e.g. conflicts between state law and Roma

social practices, such as early marriage; conflicts between Roma groups
and other Roma or non-Roma minority groups; conflicts between Roma
and non-Roma groups at the international public law level; possible
features of an international private law aimed at managing conflicts
between different Roma communities; (in)existence, in Italy or Europe, of
space for public debate on legal pluralism).
