Normal Progress Guidelines
Students are expected to complete the Ph.D. degree program in 5 years or fewer. Students entering the program with an M.S.
degree in economics or a related field should be able to complete the degree in 4 years or fewer.

Qualifying Examinations
Written qualifying examinations in microeconomic theory and macroeconomic theory are required. Examinations are administered
during the summer session between the first and second years of the Ph.D. program. Students are allowed two attempts to pass
each exam. The first attempts at the micro and macro exams will be approximately three weeks following spring semester
graduation. The second attempts will be during the week before classes begin for the fall semester.
Fields of Concentration
Mastery in two fields of concentration is required. Mastery is demonstrated by completion of coursework requirements with a grade
of B+ or higher in each course. Fields of concentration in the Department of Economics are chosen from: Agricultural Economics,
Applied Econometrics (as 3rd field only), Environmental and Resource Economics, Financial Economics, Human Resources, Industrial
Organization, International Economics, and Macroeconomics

Program of Study and Committee Appointment Form (POSC)
Students should work with their major professor to determine a POS committee consisting of at least five graduate faculty members.
At least three committee members, including the major professor, must be from the student’s major with at least one committee
member from outside the student’s field of emphasis. In consultation with the student’s POS committee, an official Program of
Study is developed. This document lists all the classes the student will complete in order to obtain the desired degree. The POSC
form should be filed no later than the 5th semester in the program. This form is available on the graduate student status page in
AccessPlus and must be approved by the Graduate College at least one semester prior to holding the preliminary exam.
Third Year Paper
A formal research paper under the direction of the major professor is required during the third year of the Ph.D. program. This paper
must be satisfactorily completed before the end of the summer following the third year.
Request for Preliminary Oral Examination
This form must be submitted to the Graduate College at least two weeks prior to the planned examination date. The form requires
the signature of the major professor and the Director of Graduate Education before submission to the Graduate College for
approval. Forms are available in 260 Heady.
Preliminary Oral Examination
This examination is required of all Ph.D. students and is administered by the Program of Study Committee. Students are required to
be registered for a minimum of 2 graduate credits in the semester in which they complete their preliminary exam. Students are
required to provide a copy of the research proposal to each committee member at least two weeks prior to the preliminary oral
examination. The preliminary oral examination should be completed by the seventh semester in the Ph.D. program and must be
completed at least 6 months prior to the final oral examination.

Application for Graduation (Diploma Slip)
Students must apply for graduation through Access Plus by the third week of the semester in which they plan to graduate to avoid a
late fee. Late Applications for Graduation will be accepted through the fifth week of the semester with an additional late fee. Fees
will also be imposed for students who chose not to graduate and do not cancel their application for graduation by the cancelation
deadline. If graduation is delayed to a future semester, students must refile their application in accordance with the new semester’s
deadlines. Students should have a completed and approved POSC form at the time of diploma slip submission.
Request for Final Examination
This form must be submitted to the Graduate College at least three weeks prior to the planned examination date. The form requires
the signature of all committee members. Forms are available on the grad college website at http://www.grad‐

Oral Defense‐of‐dissertation Final Examination
Students are required to be registered for a minimum of two graduate credits in the semester in which they complete their final
exam. Students are required to provide a copy of the dissertation to each member of the Program of Study Committee at least two
weeks before the final oral examination.
