TOP TIPS

The ability to think critically will help you in many areas of your life. One big
benefit is it will help you to come up with better solutions to problems. Use these
tips as a guide on how to think critically.

1. Evaluate the Situation:
You need to know what you are dealing with before you can take steps to
think more critically about it. If it’s a problem that needs to be solved, you
should define the problem as concretely as possible. Getting input from others
in your team can expand your definition to cover more about it.

2. Get Multiple Perspectives:
While getting different perspectives from your team is helpful, you should look
outside your team for other input. Teams tend to think as a unit over time.
Getting outsiders to pitch in about the situation or problem will help you go
deeper, which is a key component to critical thinking.

3. Determine Reasons for Your Views:
When you come up with a definition for your problem space, you need to also
determine the reasons why you came up with them. When you do this, you
may see that you have introduced bias into the process and evaluate whether
to frame the problem set differently. The goal is to come up with reasons that
are as objective as possible.

4. Determine Reasons for Views from Others:
Just as important is to determine if the feedback you received from others
contains bias or is too much based on opinion. You have to be careful not to
insult people when you go about this as you did ask for input. Then again,
critical thinking requires as much objective information as you can find.

5. Keep Emotions in Check:
People often let their emotions get the better of them. When thinking
critically, it’s important to try and remove emotions from the process as much
as possible. This can be easier said than done but with practice, it can become
easier. If you feel that a situation is overwhelming, take a break to clear your
head.

6. Gather Evidence that Supports Your Thinking:
Once you have come up with perspectives from yourself and others, it is time
to gather evidence and as many facts as possible to support those
perspectives. This is a crucial step and requires discipline. You can’t just accept
any results. They must be from reliable sources. If you are weak on this type of
skill, consider seeking the help of a good research librarian.

7. It’s Okay to Have an Opinion:
While you seek objectivity, you can include your opinion based on the
evidence that you find. As long as you use the evidence to back up that opinion
you should not encounter problems doing so. This is not to say no one will
challenge you. Those challenges should be welcome.
