A Brief History

Cazenovia began providing an ambulance service in 1972,

the second community to do so in Richland County. We
formally organized and became licensed as the Cazenovia
Area Rescue Squad in 1976.

Our agency was born out of a recognized need for

emergency services at a time when rural EMS was in its
infancy in Wisconsin. In 1971, Cazenovia Firefighter Vince
Duren encountered a fatal collision 1/2 mile south of the
village. The surviving occupants had significant injuries and
required urgent
transport. At that
time, hospital
transports were
typically provided
by hearses.

better by our citizens, Duren, and fellow Firefighter Pat

aid provided assistance. Duren and Mortimore recruited P.O. Box 183

provide care, but the mission has remained the same. We

 Who We Are
We are a family of volunteers grounded in our
mission of providing help to those in need when
they need it. Since 1976, our crew has been
dedicated to providing effective and
compassionate medical care for each patient we
serve. Born with a philosophy of neighbors
helping neighbors, this mindset carries on today
through our volunteers’ commitment to
community and each other.
What We Do
Cazenovia EMT’s provide a range of services to
the area we serve. This involves responding to
calls through the 911 system for any variety of
situations. We provide on-scene medical care,
both emergency and non-emergency transports
to hospital emergency departments, and rehab
and care at fire scenes within our district or as
requested by neighboring services.
We also provide standby services for a variety of
athletics and events. Our service is dedicated to
community involvement through participation in
health fairs, blood pressure checks, and
community education through local and national
initiatives; such as National EMS Week, CPR, Stop
The Bleed, stroke awareness, and etc.
How To Join
Admission to the squad involves the submission
of an application, passing a background check,
and an interview with our panel. A new EMT will
also provide credentials, undergo service specific
training, and a skills checkoff. Upon joining, each
EMT is issued a pager, portable radio, uniform
shirt, dress polo, and winter jacket.
Obtaining An EMT License
To earn EMT certification, an individual must
enroll in and pass a 180 hour EMT course offered
through area technical colleges. Upon successful
completion of the class, a student will be
prepared to test in the National Registry
psychomotor and knowledge exams. Upon
passage of both exams, the EMT may apply for a
Wisconsin state license and credential with the
appropriate service. Courses are offered each
semester at the respective campus or at local
stations based on demand. More information can

Maintaining Your License
EMT’s are expected to renew their license on a
biannual basis. Continuing education
requirements can be met through the completion
of a refresher course or via in-house training.
Cazenovia Ambulance requires attendance at 75%
of trainings to maintain proficiency and
continuing education hours for renewal.
Financial Assistance
We recognize the financial burden tuition can
place on an individual. Cazenovia EMS offers a
number of financial aid packages for those that
need it. We also provide full reimbursement of
course expenses incurred following a
probationary period. Details and conditions are
discussed in the interview process.
