I. Introduction of the Research

Accuracy of interpretation is the key to skillful learning and better living. A learner
who interprets well will surely develop better understanding and effective adjustment
towards life’s situations. Interpreting graph may consider one of the most essential skill
to be developed to have better textual understanding but poor interpretation always
results to difficulty to develop the skill.
Based on the result of the National Achievement Test conducted last School
Year 2014-2015, it shows that majority of the Grade Six pupils of Isidro Paredes
Elementary School got low scores in PELC objective in Filipino under the interpretation
of graph. This information is confirmed in the study of Mendoza et al (2000) on Pupils'
Concepts of Graphs that Grade six pupils got 78% MPS in the interpretation of graphs.
These findings were further confirmed in the study of Lowrie & Deizman (2001) that
Grade VI pupils finds difficulty in decoding a variety of graphics.
Berg & Smith, (2001) elaborated on the findings of Lowrie and Deizman (2001)
that the reason for the poor performance of Grade VI pupils in interpreting graphs is due
to the deficiency of pupils in cognitive and logical thinking abilities such as spatial
thinking and proportional reasoning.
It was along this context that the researcher will be conducted to assess the
effectiveness of Modified Modular Materials (MMM) as a vehicle in enhancing skills in
interpretation of graph of grade six pupils of Isidro Paredes Elementary School for the
school year 2015-2016.

Statement of the Problem

This action research aimed to assess the effectiveness of MMM a vehicle to
enhance skills in interpretation of graph (Filipino subject) of Grade six pupils of Isidro
Paredes Elementary School for school year 2015-2016.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following question:

1. What is the mean score of grade six pupils on the pre-test before MMM was
given?
2. What is the mean score of grade six pupils on the post-test after MMM was
given?
3. Is there a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores
after MMM was introduced?
4. What is the effect size on the performance of Grade six pupils after MMM
was introduced?

Null Hypothesis
The study will work on the null hypothesis: “There is no significant difference
between the pre-test and post-test scores after the implementation of MMM.”

Definition of Terms
To provide a frame of reference for better understanding of the study, the
following terms are operationally defined.
MMM. Refers to the strategy provided to enhance skills in graph interpretation.
This is the process of using compiled materials in a modular form.
Interpretation of Graph. This refers to the way the pupils interpret graphs to get
the idea the graph represents.
II. METHODOLOGY
A. Sampling
The researcher will use of descriptive- comparative research design. The
respondents of the study will be the Twenty-eight Grade six pupils of Isidro Paredes
Elementary School of Diffun District 1 enrolled for the school year 2015-2016.

B. Data Collection
The data to be used for statistical computation will be the performance of the
pupils in the pre-test and post-test covering “interpretation of graph.” The study will use
the universal sampling which means that all pupils will be the as respondent.

C. Ethical Issues
The researcher found out that the Grade Six pupils encountering difficulties
interpretation of graphs. She then formulate an action research to address this issue and
ask permission to proper authorities to conduct action research.

D. Plan for data Analysis

Gathered data will be interpreted using statistical tools specifically mean,
standard deviation, paired sample t-test and eta2.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE
This action reseach shall be conducted to improve the spelling ability of the thirty
(30) Grade Six learners of Isidro Paredes Elementary School, District 1 of Diffun, Diffun,
Quirino.

DESIGN/ METHODOLOGY
Descriptive-comparative research design will be employed in this action research
using the universal or take all technique. The mean, standard devition, paired t-test and
eta shall be used as the statistical treatment.

ORIGINALITY/ VALUE
The result of this study is of great help in improving the spelling ability of the
Grade Six learners of Isidro Paredes Elementary School. The results of the study shall
also be presented to the school for the prioritization of funds for the reproduction of the
MMM of the worksheets encouraging teachers to find ways to improve the spelling ability
of their learners.

RESEARCH LIMITATIONS
This study will be limited in improving the spelling ability of the Grade Six
learners of Isidro Paredes Elementary School, District 1 of Diffun, Diffun, Quirino, for
School Year 2015 – 2016.
