ADDENDUM B

Rough notes on how I planned my translation.

 In my planning to translate, I first analysed the translation brief determined by

the initiator which is Provincial Treasury in Limpopo and based on my analysis,
I determined that it is possible to fulfil the requirements of the brief.
 I also determined the gist of the source text which is to inform Members of the
Limpopo Provincial Legislature as well as the citizens of Limpopo about the
financial status of the province.
 I answered Nord’s checklist in this manner:
 The first thing was for me to determine who the transmitter of the source text
was, the answer is the MEC for Provincial Treasury in Limpopo on behalf of
Provincial Treasury in Limpopo.
 I also determined the targeted readership, which is the Members of the Limpopo
Provincial Legislature as well as the general public, especially the citizens of
Limpopo since the Budget Speech was for the whole province.
 In my planning, I further determined the intention of the sender, which is to
inform Members of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature as well as the general
public about the financial status of the province.
 I determined the medium used, which is an article published in the department’s
website.
 The origin of the communication was determined and it is Limpopo Province in
South Africa
 The function of the text was also determined which is to inform.
 I also determined the subject matter. The subject matter is finance
 I determined the content of the text in my planning and I discovered that the
content is technical with a lot of financial terms.
 I also determined that the sender has vast knowledge pertaining to the financial
status and the background of the financial position of the province.
 I also determined that the text didn’t use any non-linguistic features, therefore,
there were no non-verbal elements which had to be adapted. I preserved
linguistic features using the…… translation method and annotated accordingly
 The lexical features of the text have been translated into Xitsonga with some
nouns being left in English.
 In my planning, I also determined that the syntactic structure of my target text
will differ from that of the source text since Xitsonga is an indigenous language
which differs structurally with English.
 The tone of the text was also determined and it is formal, optimistic and
persuasive
 In summary, the text is well formulated, though technical, it can be translated
and will be congruent with the translation brief.
