Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

RATIONALE

The Banate National Highschool (BNHS) students are eligible to follow the school rules and
regulations. The school rules and regulations are important to follow because they pertains to
instructions and respecting everybody. These are so much valuable skills to learn to enable
school or a class to run smoothly and peacefully. Discipline oneself should be the first thing to
do. Because if a person has a discipline to herself or himself, he or she will be able to act as a
good person to others and put proper characteristics in various daily living. Every school is
required by government regulations to maintain discipline and to issue disciplinary rules for
strict compliance. Concrete, reasonable and fair discipline is the foundation of an effective and
efficient institution.

According to Kumar (2016), discipline in school life is very important for students. We can’t be well
educated without discipline. Without learning and the following discipline in school life can cost students
later in their career. In school education, discipline is a set of rules & regulations that remind us of the
proper code of behavior. Discipline is ever more important during school life. But discipline is not only
important for school students it’s for everyone. Discipline is a self-improvement practice. It is what helps
us all to achieve our goals in life. And that’s why I think implementations of discipline in students mind
help them to achieve their goals and dreams later in life.

Malayan High School of Science (2013) states that s tudent discipline is one of major concerns and
issues at the center of adolescents’ life in the school. MHSS implements a set of school rules and
regulations that em¬bodies standards of behavior befitting mature and responsible adolescents. MHSS
students are expected to observe standards of behavior that are stated as Commit¬ments to a life of
Discipline, Excellence, Integrity, and Responsibility (DECIR). Dedication and adherence to these standards
of behavior contribute to the attain¬ment of the school’s mission and goals. The act of enrollment
confirms the fact that the student and his parents agree to abide by the school policies, rules, and
regulations on discipline.

In the locality, researchers found out that some of the students are following the school rules
and regulations but some of them are disobeyed it. That's why, the school implement strict
rules and regulations like waste segregation. There are assigned students to regularly check the
classrooms garbages if it's segregated or not. Then, to those who maintained cleanliness will be
rewarded soon. Also, to those who are not maintaining waste segregation. This is one example
of strategies of the school to maintain the discipline.

The researchers would like to conduct this study to know the experiences, situations, and
strategies of students in following the school rules and regulations.
Research Objective

1. To know the discipline level of the students in following the school rules and regulations.

Research Questions

1. What are the strategies of students in following the school rules and regulations?

2. What are the struggles face by the students in following the school rules and regulations?

3. What are the causes and effects for the students who obey and disobey the school rules and
regulations?

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the review of related literatures that have a bearing
with the present study.

The Role of School Discipline on Students’ Academic Performance in Dar Es


Salaam Region, Tanzania

According to Mussa (2015), the ultimate goal of any educational system was the
provision of quality education and training. The academic performance of the students
will not be success without school discipline in teaching. The term loco parentis which
literally means “in the place of the parents, to educators” was applied by William
Blackstone in 1770. The teachers has the ability to act as a parent and put a disciplinary
actions given by the loco parentis (Conte, 2000). Discipline in school is a very significant
aspect towards academic excellence. On the other hand, the problem rises on its lack
such as lack of vision and mission, poor time management, irregular attendance and
punishment. The achievement of goals, expectation and responsibility in students helps
by the effective discipline (Dunham, 1984:66). A good image of the school and good
discipline prepares the learners in the future. With good discipline, disruptive behaviour
will remove amongst learners at school. The implementation of effective discipline at
school is a key for the learner in his journey to be mature and sensible, not childish. By
it's meaning, discipline is the ability to bring off rational directions or orders to reach
proper standards of behaviors. It is understood to be that ideal quality in human being
which is consociate with and able to be seen by a person's ability to do things well at the
right time , in the right event or situation that you cannot control with or without little
guidance. If the students are to benefit from the opportunities offered to them, school
discipline is a vital element in any educational institution. It ruin the teacher-learning
environment when there's an indiscipline in schools, and consequently, school strikes.
Some schools become actually being prisons as they build a huge walls and expensive
fences to safeguard good students, teachers, and property against undiscipline
students. For teaching and learning, school rules and regulations should ease
administrative work, should focus on the innovation of good atmosphere. Assuredly, a
person involves discipline as a preparation for her to be a complete and productive
member of a community; the one who knows his/her obligations to their community was
a discipline member of a community.

lmportance of Dicipline in School Life

A detailed description on importance of discipline in school life was given by Kumar (2016). It is
important that student should be decipline in school and it is part of student life. Its because without
discipline we cant be well educated with out learning and following school life discipline and policy, it
can cost students later in thier career. In education school, decipline is said to be a set of policy , rule and
policy, rule and regulations that remind evry student of what is proper code of behavior, and it is even
more important in school life. But it seems like descipline come to be not only important for students but
also for every people. Its because its self important practice which helps us to achieve our dreams in
life.Thats why think implementation of in students remind them to achieve their goals and dream in their
life.But sa to say ,there are students who try to escape the rules and regulations and that if desciplined is
not maintained or strictly govern.That iswhy desciplin is really important and play such role in a student
life.If a student are aligned to the objective,then the future of the country will be excessive.

Review On the Impact of Teacher's Behavior on Students Self-regulation

Students in field of education, society,and family are absence of interest for obeying rules and discipline
in schools could bring on many different problems.The foundation for staying away from obeying rules
and law,lack of self-respect and more law interruption even in students who do not have serious and
abnormal behavior and problems ,such a absence of interest forward self-regulation sets.The most
significant sources in building students personality progress , teachers who have knowledge and skills in
make out problems and fellowship with students.This study attempts to explain the importance of
teachers role in creating self-regulation behaviors in students,this research in investigates following
hypothesis:1

1. Between the teachers friendly relationship and fellowship and students impatient for discipline,there
is meaningful positive correlation.

2. Between teachers quantity of respect for students and students institution, there is a admiring and
meaningful relationship.

3. Between teachers exertion in all explaining educational material to students and students itself, there
is positive meaningful relationship.
4. Between teachers self-regulation model and students acceptance of discipline,there is meaningful
relationship.

400 grade 6 male students were selected randomly from adjuration schools of 6th district of Tehran and
data we're collected by researcher made questionnaire,in order to test the research proposition.

The ascendence of teachers self-regulation model for students, teachers agreeable effort in order to
clear educational materials, consider and acceptance toward students,as well as family success cause the
increase of the students self-regulative behavior,the research result displayed that open-minded and
truthful relationship between teachers and students.

and obedience as a person behavior the example of self-discipline is wearing uniform to
randomize the school regulation that is the one example of discipline your self.But many
student is not understand the rules and regulations of the school because of her own will
because of that performance the teachers are problem of this kind of society.So that for the
students is not affected of this kind of rules is enhancing discipline in public secondary schools.
Matsoga(2003) he discovered that the broad to open,arrange this kind of violence and
misbehaviour that existed in many secondary schools this lack of absence discipline to become
involved in the activities with instruction and learnings process,manifested itself in different
from each other including bullying,vandalism,alcohol consumptional in the quality of being
unwillingness in class work (Adams, 2003).

Influence of School Rules' Formulation on Students' Discipline in Public Secondary Schools in


Makueni County

The school system there is a wisdom and serious concern that bearing problems are edimic
inschool.along with acadimic performance school discepline rate as one of the mojor concern spoken by
the public about school.(MUTUA 2004) the world over that teacher stuggling to preserve order and that
school expert an unable to deal the sately of student.The liable of creating and preserve an invironment
for teaching and learning .teacher administrators and servant change with.The average of the student
discepline in united kingdom have been decline.acording to docking J.W.(2006).The USA school action
has attempted to creat policies to secure school hair safe and picked up the invironment required for
high student accomplishment school district student were include in violence bundering on verbal and
physical abuse to teachers.according to Matsuga(2003)(skiba&spargue(2008).Student in lack of
descipline has for some time now plagued schools in Botswana attemp to address increasing concern
with descepline and bullying adopted more and more stringest policies to address student behaviour.

Significance of the Study Characteristics

The results of the will be of great benefit to the following:

School. It will serve as an accomplishment and guidance for the school, aiming a better future
for the students.

Teachers. The results of this study will help them on how to manage their students very well
and encourage them to be motivated on their studies.

Parents. This will serve for the parents to advice their children to be a role model to everyone.
Students. It will serve as a motivation and inspiration for them to be a disciplined and obedient
individual.

Future Researchers. This will serve as a basis for their future and a guide if they wanted to
conduct a research about the discipline level of students in following the school rules and
regulations.

Scope and Delimitations

The study focuses on the discipline level of students in following the school rules and
regulations. The study was conducted in Banate, Malungon Sarangani Province on. It discuss
about the experiences and situations of students toward in following the school rules and
regulations.

Definition of Terms

Discipline- a practice for following and obeying the rules and regulations with punishment to
those who shows bad behavior.

Level- a position, amount or quantity of something.

Following- obeying and supporting whatsoever.

School- a place where the students were able to learn and hone their skills.

Rules and Regulations- an instruction or laws to be obeyed.

METHOD

Research Design

The Research Design is descriptive. It describes the current status of those


students in Banate National High School and this design can be a great
help to fully understand our aim to express their concerns and confidence
level.

Research Locale

The research was conducted in Banate National High School, Banate


Malungon Sarangani Province.

Sampling Method

The researchers used random sampling. In which the researchers will pick
students randomly from different sections of the school, BNHS.
