Interview Development Assessment

Task 1: Purpose

I will be interviewing Maxine Hong Kingston and my goal for the interview is to learn if Maxine
followed or rebelled against Chinese standards in America with the death of her aunt.

Task 2: Questions

1. Based on your culture, do you believe that the tradition of men being superior to women
will pass on in your family for generations?
2. Based on the word choice you used in No Named Woman, do you agree with your
mother using your aunt’s story for advice?
3. Does the story of your aunt have the same influence on you since you’ve been exposed
to different cultures in America?
4. Do you think your aunt was justified to kill herself and her child?
5. Do you think your morals would have changed if the man in your family went through
the same situation as your aunt?
6. If you were a male, do you believe that your mother would have given you the same
advice?
7. Do you believe that your mother disowned your aunt just to conform to Chinese
traditions?
8. Has your principal about a relationship changed due to your family’s history?
9. Since your book begins telling the story of your aunt and you later transition to how it has
impacted your life, do you agree with family’s assumptions and actions?
10. If your aunt committed adultery in America, do you believe there would have been a
different outcome?

Task 3: Rationale
Maxine’s book No Name Woman has a morose and questionable tone which gives me the
thought that I have to use a sensible approach when asking questions. Many readers have the
question of whether Maxine carries the same principals in America since hearing about the
family secret. With myself, my goal is to learn the same and determine if her exposure to
different cultures causes confusion about Maxine’s identity. In order to answer this question, I’d
have to create a calm and trusting environment for Maxine; which gave me the idea to ask the
easy questions first. Starting off the interview, I’d like to ask Maxine how she felt being given
advice from her mother. This would help me lead into the question of if Maxine believed her
aunt had other choices to cope with the condition she was in. One of the deepest questions I
provided as if the author felt her aunt’s death was justified, however in Maxine’s eyes, this could
be a hostile question. Through the question about Maxine’s mother’s advice, I would be able to
understand if the Maxine was sympathetic toward her aunt which would indicate if she felt her
aunt’s suicide was justified. Later in the interview, I would like to know how Maxine and her
family adjusted to being in a different country that was culturally diverse and accepting. To make
a fitting transition, I’d ask Maxine if she thinks her country’s situation would have been different
if her family lived in America. So, as to achieve getting a strong answer, this question will not
only require Maxine to Talk about her culture but also say how her aunt influenced her aunt. In
closing, I would use her answers to explain how strong Maxine was to hold Chinese-American
standards, and lastly, I would thank her for her time.
