Weebly Journal - College and I

1. Why do you think students go to college? What types of students do you think
go to college?
Most people go to be the first out of the family to make it. I believe most wealthy kids go
to college and kid with big opportunities. If you work hard even if your not rich i think you
can make it as well but about 75% is rich wealthy kids that have money to pay for psat
practices and there full way out without financial issues.

2. What are your family members’ experiences with college? (Are you a
first-generation college student)

My sister go to a community college for cosmetology my mom got her GED i believe
that's the farthest they gone.

3. Do you believe college can help improve your life? Why or why not?

I really do believe college can change your life around if thats really what you want
and you put your mind to it. If you work hard and you value your future you can
make your dreams possible.

4. What challenges do you think you will face as a college student?
Time management would probably be hard and trying to get all the work done and
staying motivated.

5. Based on your viewing of the film “First-Generation, which character did you
find the most relatable? (Explain why)
I can really relate to somu.I can relate to somu because his mom is low income and was
taking care of his siblings on her own because his father passed away. Somu also has a
passion for his dancing and sports and so do I.He is a very smart and determined and wants
to make it out to help the rest of his family.

6. “It is the responsibility of the community, at the local, state, and national
levels, to guarantee that financial barriers do not prevent any able and
otherwise qualified person from receiving the opportunity for higher education.
If college opportunities are restricted to those in higher income brackets, the
way is open to the creation and perpetuation of a class society which has no
place in the American way of life.” –President’s Commission on Higher
Education, 1947.

Do you believe America is classist (favors the rich over the poor) in its view of
higher education? Why? (use the film to help explain your answer)

I do believe they are favored because they make everyone pay amounts they know
even scholarships of fafsa can cover full. They know we live in bad neighborhoods
who don't offer a lot of good and advanced education.
