DILAS FT2000

1 PRINCIPLE AND APPLICATIONS

1.1 Principle
The DILAS FT2000 is a digital, high resolution, non-contact laser measurement sensor. It measures on all
non-shiny surfaces.
The operation of the DILAS FT2000 is based on time of flight measurement. The sensor calculates the
distance of the target surface using the time of flight of visible laser light pulses.

1.2 General description

The DILAS FT2000 is an autonomous sensor mounted in a cast aluminium housing. A hood
for protecting the window glass is fitted with an air-jet facility to blow a vertical air curtain in
front of the glass.
The case is mounted on a cooling plate including a stainless steel pipe and fixed to a
mounting stand, adjustable in two axes. The electrical connection is made via a
connector. The sensor is delivered already equipped with the corresponding plug on
silicone-armoured cable (2 m standard length).
A digital display at the rear of the sensor indicates the measured distance, or an error
code for diagnostic.

1.3 Typical applications

1.3.1 Dimension – position control

Billet - Bloom length measurement Position control

Slab Position control Length – Width measurement

Tube diameter measurement Coil position control, Width - Diameter measurement

DILAS FT2000

1.3.2 Detection

Reheat furnace - charging: Detection of slabs or bloom

In front of reheat furnace, the environmental condition and the problem of access make the installation of optical
barrier with reflector very difficult. The laser detector measures the slab edge position and the detection range is
set to have product presence output activated if the edge is within the roll table width. The incidence angle β can
by typically up to 30°.

Reheat furnace – charging: detection of billet

Cooling bed: Detection of plate

Laser detector can be used for replacing optical barriers when the installation of reflector is not possible. In this
application the measurement cannot take place on the plate because of the very large incidence angle. The
laser detector uses the cooling bed frame as a target and the detection range is set around the position of this
target. If the measure is within the range there is no plate, any plate coming in the laser field obstructs the
measure on the target indicating a plate on the cooling bed. In this application the measurement on the plate
may be impossible because of the very large incidence angle, it is recommended to set the sensor in sampling
mode 2 or 3 with a fixed sampling time refer to § 4.3.5.

2 MOUNTING AND CONNECTIONS

2.1 Location
For the choice of the location, try to protect as far as possible the optical window against eventual deposits
of dust and to place the sensor away from hot billet, bloom or slab.
See also § 2.5. precautions for laser safety.

DILAS FT2000

2.2 Mounting
See mechanical specifications and dimensions § 10.
The DILAS FT2000 is fixed on his stand with a screw (∅ 12 mm). The foot is adjustable in 2 axes and allows
an easy alignment.
The stand should be sufficiently rigid to maintain the required alignment for the measuring range and
accuracy.
The DILAS FT2000 has a water cooling plate and a hood with air purging for protection of the window glass,
thus permitting the use in harsh environment.
However in some severe cases, it will be absolutely necessary to protect the sensor with an auxiliary heat
shield (see § 11.1 our heat shield proposed as accessory), or to remove excessive water vapour with
additional ventilation, etc...

2.3 Electrical connection

Electrical connection to the sensor DILAS FT2000 is a mating 15 pin connector (with ground) and a 2 m long
cable. Other cable lengths are available.
Cable and connector are pre-assembled and supplied with the sensor.
Cable specifications:
• Multi-core cable 9 x 0.6 mm² + 7 x 0.34 mm² shielded (included 2 twisted pairs)
• Silicone rubber insulation for temperature up to 150 °C (300 °F)
• Outer metallic braid providing mechanical protection
• Cable diameter: 13 mm
• Minimum bending radius: 60 mm (2.4”)
• Each core is either colour coded or numbered
• Core ends are terminated with crimps ferrules

The cable can be directly connected to the terminals of a junction box.

Note: Unused outputs should be insulated or connected to free terminals. If the serial link is not used, it is recommended
to strap the 2 wires of the link (pin 4A and 4B) through a 100 Ω resistor.

Use of the outputs:

• The 0 V of the sensor has to be connected to the 0 V of the user. If not yet connected to the earth,
the 0 V should be connected to earth at user side.
• The shields of the sensor cable must be grounded.
• The sensor ground connection is through the connector via a green/yellow wire and must be
connected to a proper protective earth point.

Note: The sensor is supplied with a protective cover on the connector. Do not remove until the mating connector is
plugged in as it protects the contacts from corrosion and improves the hermetic sealing of the sensor.

DILAS FT2000

2.4 Air and Water connection

2.4.1 Cooling
Embedded in the cooling plate of the DILAS FT2000, there is a stainless steel pipe to cool the sensor with
water (or air).

It is necessary to cool the sensor if the ambient temperature is over 50 °C (120 °F).
Cooling water specifications:
• Clean industrial quality water at 25 °C (77 °F), maximum temperature 35 °C (95 °F).
• Pressure 1-2 bars, maximum recommended: 4 bars (approximately 60 PSI).
• Flow rate: 1-2 l/mn (approximately 0.5 gal/mn) (see picture above).
• Material: stainless steel (inside Ø 6 mm) cast in the cooling plate.
• Connections: rubber hose, Ø 10 mm.
2.4.2 Air purging
A supply of instrument air may be connected to the protective hood. The system is designed to provide
positive pressure in front of the window glass.
Air purging specifications:
• Air quality : the air should be dry and free from oil or dust. If these conditions cannot be met it is
better not to use air to avoid deposit of oil on the window glass.
• Air pressure : 50 to 200 g/cm² (1 to 3 PSI).
• Flow rate : 4 to 6 l/min (0.15 to 0.6 CFM).
• Connection : rubber tubing 10 mm diameter (0.4).
2.5 Precaution for laser safety
As per IEC 60825-1: 2007, the DILAS FT2000 is equipped with a class 2 laser diode with an emitted power
below 1 mW, and the DILAS FT2300 is equipped with a class 3R laser diode with an emitted power below
5 mW.
Following precautions are required:
• It is necessary to prevent from a continuous viewing in the laser beam.
• A momentary exposure (0.25 s) which could arrive during an accidental viewing situation is not
considered as dangerous. However it is not allowed to aim deliberately the laser beam towards
people. The use of optical instruments (glasses for instance) could be dangerous.

• Every DILAS FT2000, FT2300 has a warning logotype fixed on his housing as shown below:

DILAS FT2000

Other precautions are depending on national regulations.

3 INSTALLATION

3.1 Inspection of the installation

Before turning on the power supply to the sensor, final checks should be carried out:
• Mounting of the sensor (distance, rigidity of the support, etc...)
• Electrical connections (especially the mains supply and the insulation of unused outputs)
• Air and water connections (where cooling is necessary, the sensor should not be
mounted without being cooled even if electrical connections are not made)
3.2 Mechanical orientation
For the mechanical orientation of the sensor DILAS FT2000, make the beam visible by moving an
unpolished target along the measuring range.
• Check that the laser beam is reflected on the smallest target for the measuring range required.
• Check the values of the analogue output and display nearby the ends of the measuring range.

4 CONFIGURATION

4.1 Parameters setting

The DILAS FT2000 sensors are delivered ready for installation configured with default factory parameters
and will work without changing the configuration for most of the application with a measuring range of 0 to 10
m. For larger measuring range and/or to optimize the measurements, the DILAS FT2000 can be
programmed over the serial link RS485 to change the parameter values.

6 MAINTENANCE

6.1 Onsite maintenance

DILAS FT2000 sensor does not require regular maintenance. Some checks are possible to be made on site
by looking at the laser spot on a target. The spot should be without secondary reflection and not blurred. If
not, the window glass may be dirty thus diffracting the laser.

Caution:
• Use an unpolished target.
• Never look towards laser but towards target.

6.2 Visual inspection

All service operation should be done where the interior of the sensor will not be exposed to the atmosphere
of the site.
• Check the window glass and clean. If it is scratched or broken, it should be changed along with its
gasket.
• Check general condition of the sensor, especially mating connector, inside wiring, cover seal,
cooling pipe.

Other queries:
Following queries can be used for compatibility reasons with older sensors :

41 Hex : Identity request

Same as 4F hex, but with serial number on last 5 bytes.
In an already working installation using older DILAS sensors, this ¨old¨ query can still be used even with
new sensors having serial number over 100.000. In that case, the answer from sensor to master will only
use the 5 last bytes ASCII of the serial number.

Query : Master Æ Slave frame :

Head = Ø2 Hex Address 41 Hex Checksum End = Ø3 Hex

Answer : Slave Æ Master frame :

Head = Ø2 Hex Address+80 Hex 41 Hex Data :9 bytes Checksum End = Ø3 Hex

DILAS FT2000

Data
Reference : 4 bytes ASCII Serial number : 5 bytes ASCII

Example with a DILAS FT2007, serial number : 101215, at the address 7.

Query
Ø2 Hex Ø7 Hex 41 Hex 4A Hex Ø3 Hex
Answer
Ø2 Hex 87 Hex 41 Hex 2007: 4 bytes ASCII 01215: 5 bytes ASCII 8C Hex Ø3 Hex

42 Hex : Request for measurement

Same protocol as 43 Hex query and answer.
If the sensor is in « LASER OFF » state but LASER OFF function is not selected by hardware, (pins 3A and
3B are not connected on connector), then the sensor will automatically be put in « LASER ON » state after
receiving 43 Hex query.
Status monitoring in « LASER OFF » state is not possible with 42 Hex query.

Note : the first measure values after a « LASER OFF » state will be 00000 (ASCII) and up to 4 s
in difficult measuring conditions (reflecting or absorbing surfaces).

45 Hex : Allocation of an address number (serial number on 5 bytes)

Same control byte is used. The sensor recognises both queries with serial number on 5 or 6 bytes. In
an already working installation using older DILAS sensors, this query can still be used even with new
sensors having serial number over 100.000. In that case, the data field uses only the 5 last bytes ASCII
from the serial number.

Query : Master Æ Slave frame :

Head = Ø2 Hex Address=ØØ Hex 45 Hex Data: 6 bytes Checksum End = Ø3 Hex
Note : address 0 is used, only the sensor having the corresponding serial number will change its address.

Data
Serial number: 5 bytes ASCII Address: 1 byte
No answer

Example for product serial number 101215 at address 8. The five last characters are used.

Query
Ø2 Hex ØØ Hex 45 Hex 01215: 5 bytes ASCII Ø8 Hex 48 Hex Ø3 Hex

Check can be done with identity request at address 8.
