DILAS FT2000
1.1 Principle
The DILAS FT2000 is a digital, high resolution, non-contact laser measurement sensor. It measures on all
non-shiny surfaces.
The operation of the DILAS FT2000 is based on time of flight measurement. The sensor calculates the
distance of the target surface using the time of flight of visible laser light pulses.

1.3.2 Detection
2.1 Location
For the choice of the location, try to protect as far as possible the optical window against eventual deposits
of dust and to place the sensor away from hot billet, bloom or slab.
See also § 2.5. precautions for laser safety.

DILAS FT2000
2.2 Mounting
See mechanical specifications and dimensions § 10.
The DILAS FT2000 is fixed on his stand with a screw (∅ 12 mm). The foot is adjustable in 2 axes and allows
an easy alignment.
The stand should be sufficiently rigid to maintain the required alignment for the measuring range and
accuracy.
The DILAS FT2000 has a water cooling plate and a hood with air purging for protection of the window glass,
thus permitting the use in harsh environment.
However in some severe cases, it will be absolutely necessary to protect the sensor with an auxiliary heat
shield (see § 11.1 our heat shield proposed as accessory), or to remove excessive water vapour with
additional ventilation, etc...
Note: Unused outputs should be insulated or connected to free terminals. If the serial link is not used, it is recommended
to strap the 2 wires of the link (pin 4A and 4B) through a 100 Ω resistor.
Note: The sensor is supplied with a protective cover on the connector. Do not remove until the mating connector is
plugged in as it protects the contacts from corrosion and improves the hermetic sealing of the sensor.

DILAS FT2000
It is necessary to cool the sensor if the ambient temperature is over 50 °C (120 °F).
Cooling water specifications:
• Clean industrial quality water at 25 °C (77 °F), maximum temperature 35 °C (95 °F).
• Pressure 1-2 bars, maximum recommended: 4 bars (approximately 60 PSI).
• Flow rate: 1-2 l/mn (approximately 0.5 gal/mn) (see picture above).
• Material: stainless steel (inside Ø 6 mm) cast in the cooling plate.
• Connections: rubber hose, Ø 10 mm.
2.4.2 Air purging
A supply of instrument air may be connected to the protective hood. The system is designed to provide
positive pressure in front of the window glass.
Air purging specifications:
• Air quality : the air should be dry and free from oil or dust. If these conditions cannot be met it is
better not to use air to avoid deposit of oil on the window glass.
• Air pressure : 50 to 200 g/cm² (1 to 3 PSI).
• Flow rate : 4 to 6 l/min (0.15 to 0.6 CFM).
• Connection : rubber tubing 10 mm diameter (0.4).
2.5 Precaution for laser safety
As per IEC 60825-1: 2007, the DILAS FT2000 is equipped with a class 2 laser diode with an emitted power
below 1 mW, and the DILAS FT2300 is equipped with a class 3R laser diode with an emitted power below
5 mW.
Following precautions are required:
• It is necessary to prevent from a continuous viewing in the laser beam.
• A momentary exposure (0.25 s) which could arrive during an accidental viewing situation is not
considered as dangerous. However it is not allowed to aim deliberately the laser beam towards
people. The use of optical instruments (glasses for instance) could be dangerous.
• Every DILAS FT2000, FT2300 has a warning logotype fixed on his housing as shown below:

4.3.2 Laser
Laser Off, Laser On: switch on/off the laser
4.3.3 Parameters
Distance at lower limit of Analog output: distance for 4 mA (0V)
Distance at upper limit of analog output: distance for 20 mA (10V).
Lower distance for Product presence: minimum distance for product presence (relay output)
Upper distance for Product presence: maximum distance for product presence (relay output)
Note 1: Measured position corresponds to the average position during the measuring time. In case of a relatively
constant speed we can consider that distances provided by the sensor are delayed by half the measuring time.
Factory setting: 0

Baud rate setting of sensor: this parameter sets the baud rate of the DILAS FT2000 sensor (9600, 19200
or 38400). The new Baud rate will be applied at the next power on.
Factory setting: 9600.
Error Hold Mode: this parameter defines a timeout when the sensor is not able to make a measure.
Error hold mode Sampling mode = 0 Sampling mode = 1 Sampling mode = 2 Sampling mode = 3
1
3.5 s 210 ms 560 ms 1050 ms
(factory setting)
Error hold mode = 0: no timeout, when the sensor is unable to measure, the relay output will immediately
switch to product absence state and the analogue output to 20 mA (10V).
Error hold mode = 1 or 2: the table above indicates the timeout. When the sensor is unable to measure, its
outputs will be kept as per the last valid measure. After the timeout is elapsed, the relay output will be
switched to product absence state and the analogue output to 20 mA (10V).
Factory setting : 1.
Alarm Output Mode: if set to 1, the DILAS FT2000 sensor produces a pulse from 24 V to 0 V on the alarm
output, for each new measurement of the laser module. This information can be used for synchronization.

7 SERIAL LINK
7.1 Hardware:
The hardware for the serial link is type EIA RS 485 on a twisted pair.
Asynchronous mode 9600, 19200 or 38400 bits/sec with : 1 start bit, 8 bits data, no parity, 1 stop bit. Factory
setting is 9600 bits/sec.
Note : It is necessary to put the terminating resistor of the serial link (100 Ω).
7.2 Protocol:
7.2.1 Message frame:
The master can address several individual slaves (DILAS FT2000). Slaves return a message (answer) to
queries that are addressed to them.
The slave answers to the query in about 5 ms. For new parameter allocation, the delay can be up to 30ms.
Note : For sampling mode, error hold mode, LASER ON and LASER OFF queries, and for first request for measurement (42hex)
after a “LASER OFF” state, wait 500 ms before sending next query.
Message frame:
Head = Ø2 Hex Address: 1 byte Control: 1 byte Data Checksum: 1 byte End = Ø3 Hex
Address (master to slave message) = Ø1 Hex to 1F Hex (ØØ Hex for general address). Factory setting is
address 07 Hex.
Address (answer from slave to master) = Address from request + 80 Hex.
Checksum = sum of bytes (Head +Address + Control + Data) (Last significant byte)
if checksum < 10 Hex, add 10 Hex.
Data:
The measures are given in mm, 1/10 or 1/100 inch, with 5 ASCII bytes:
Example: for a distance of 2502
In ASCII: 02502
Or in hexa: 30 Hex 32 Hex 35 Hex 30 Hex 32 Hex
Error message: when there is an error (see § 4.2.2) the data returned is in ASCII:
E0XXX where XXX corresponds to the error.
