A position paper on No Homework Policy

Introduction
Homework as define as a task assigned to student by the school teacher and intended to
be carried out during non-school hours. It is one of the unique evils that all of us can relate,
whether in plagued our evenings and weekends. Homework or assignments have been part of
the pupils lives in the school; common homework/assignment include a period of reading to be
done and writing to be completed, problems to be solved and projects to be worked on among
others. The purpose of which is for the pupils to increase their knowledge and improve their
abilities and skills.

Schools and colleges often give homework’s to student sometimes. Sometimes they get
new and unknown assignment to do. Homework is an unavoidable fact of life for everyone,
many people are starting to think that it may cause more trouble than it’s really worth. The
overburdening of the work load of the students that may be showing negative effects in their
academic as well as their home life. While the purpose of the homework is to improve students
understanding and seem to believe that this homework will help students in their academic
career.

The Body

Homework is a vital and valuable part of education. There are only few hours in each
school day- not enough time to cover properly all the subject that children need to study. Setting
homework extends study beyond school hours, allowing wider and deeper education. It also
makes the best use of teachers, who can spend lesson time teaching rather than just supervising
individual work that can be done at home. Task such as reading, writing, essays researching,
doing math problems and etc. are best done at home, away from distraction of other students.

It is truly T. G. I. F for elementary and secondary students especially in public schools

because Sen. Grace Poe filed a senate bill banning teachers to give homework or assignments
to students on weekends.

The senator authored Senate Bill 966 or the proposed “No Homework Law.” And states
that,

“All primary and secondary schools in the country shall not allow teachers to
give any homework or assignments to students from Kinder to Grade 12 on weekends.”
Under the proposed measure, teachers may only assign homework to students on
weekends provided that it will be minimal and will not require more than four hours to be
completed. Poe stressed that the “no homework” policy on weekends will be applied to both
public and private schools.

As a student, I am in favor for the implementation of No Homework Policy in school.

First, according to number two guideline of the DepEd Memorandum 392 S. 2010;
homework or assignments on weekends robs quality time on parents and children to be together
in more enjoyable activities, I personally believed that family must treasure quality time and
must possessed moments that they can stored in their long- or short-term memory. This quality
time is a means to discuss sensitive issues that only parents can deliver to strengthen the family
ties. I believed that family time would be a productive and this time could help the children
develop not only mentally but of course emotionally. Also, according to an article in
empoweringoprents.com assignments always cause nightly conflicts among the parents and the
child so I think that weekends can be a timeout and an exemption for this situation. According
to the Assistant DepEd secretary Mr. Toni Umali children should not only learn from school
itself, they must learn the importance of family bonding. According to teachtaught.com
homework may be a form of intrusion on family life, and may increase the drop-out rate in
school.

The Conclusion

Homework can put too much stress to the students and family, can cause decrease of
performances of students and when the students don’t have the teacher, they may not have
enough sleep. The bottom line of this is, we don’t train robots, we train humans. We don’t only
fill the brains of our students; we should be able to fill their hearts. Let’s make learning easy
and enjoyable let us not take times in which children could do something great with their family
and treasure the memory for the rest of their lives. Let us not make learning a horrible
experience for our students, the government, the community, the teachers and most especially
the parents should do their part to develop a child into an intelligent, responsible and loving
human being that could do something to promote excellence to the following generations.

In conclusions, homework doesn’t work. As shown by numerous studies it brings no

educational benefits and act as a root cause of conflicts between children. Homework is more
closely associated with punishment than pleasure. So, homework should be banned.
