Weebly Journal - College and I

1. Why do you think students go to college? What types of students do you think
go to college?
Students that want to get a good job or want to do big things in a certain area and
college will help them get there.

2. What are your family members’ experiences with college? (Are you a
first-generation college student)

My brother and mom did a few community college classes.
3. Do you believe college can help improve your life? Why or why not?
If its for you it can change your life depending on your goals

4. What challenges do you think you will face as a college student?

If I did go probably the school part kind of tired of going to class everyday .
5. Based on your viewing of the film “First-Generation, which character did you
find the most relatable? (Explain why)
Maybe the black kid that was trying to get a sports scholarship. I say that because
for a lot of athletes ine dream is to get a full ride scholarship for a sport

6. “It is the responsibility of the community, at the local, state, and national
levels, to guarantee that financial barriers do not prevent any able and
otherwise qualified person from receiving the opportunity for higher education.
If college opportunities are restricted to those in higher income brackets, the
way is open to the creation and perpetuation of a class society which has no
place in the American way of life.” –President’s Commission on Higher
Education, 1947.

Do you believe America is classist (favors the rich over the poor) in its view of
higher education? Why? (use the film to help explain your answer)

Yes in a way I see how the more wealthy get more and better opportunities. I
say this because even at a young age they aren't exposed to crime or dangers
you will normally see in a low income family and they get to go to these nice
schools with the best of the best. They get the best education the best food
the best facilities for sports. Growing up in an environment where your whole
life as a kid you're told college is the goal. When the time comes for college
more privileged kids get so much support and help to choose because they
weren't the first in their family to go. Most of them don't have the worries
about money, their goal is to just get accepted. There is a lot of bright people
with amazing knowledge and talents that they never get to show or let their
wings take flight because they are restricted by money.
