RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES AND IMPORTANCE

ACTIVITIES
Recreational activities tend to be done with other people, and they can be a
means of socializing and keeping fit. Recreation is often used as family time as an
event for the family to participate in a group. There are seasonal trends to some of
the activities, such as football season or tennis season. Weather can be a barrier
for outdoor activities such as swimming. How much activity a person can perform
depends upon their fitness level.

Recreation is an important process that helps refresh and reinvigorate both

the body and mind. Most recreational activities take place in what is known as
discretionary time, or time that a person has when he does not have any
responsibilities to attend to at the moment.

Recreational activities can range from physical actions such as team sports
to playing in the park or taking a hike in nature. They can also refer to exercise such
as visiting the gym or running on a trail. These activities allow people to use their
bodies and increase their levels of personal fitness for health-related reasons.

Some forms of recreational activities do not need to be physical at all. These

activities can help improve cognitive function and take stress off of a person who
thinks about work all of the time. Some non-physical recreational activities include
trivia nights, card games, board games and even video games.

Recreational activities also offer people a great way to socialize and meet
others they would normally not have contact with in their daily lives.

SWIMMING
Swimming is a great recreational activity for people of all ages. Recreational
swimming can provide you with a low-impact workout and it’s also a good way to
relax and feel good. Common swimming styles in recreational swimming are
breaststroke, backstroke, side stroke and freestyle.

Swimming is a competitive sport and is considered good all-around exercise

for people of all ages and fitness levels. It works all the major muscle groups and is
easy on the joints. It also helps build cardiovascular strength. Swimming is often
used as a form of physical therapy for injured or disabled people.

Swimming strokes, or ways of moving through the water, include freestyle,

backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke.

CAMPING
Camping is an outdoor recreational activity. The participants leave urban
areas, their home region, or civilization and enjoy nature while spending one or
several nights outdoors, usually at a campsite. Camping may involve the use of a
tent, caravan, motorhome, cabin, a primitive structure, or no shelter at all. Camping
as a recreational activity became popular in the early 20th century.
Campers frequent national or state parks, other publicly owned natural
areas, and privately owned campgrounds. Camping is a key part of many youth
organizations around the world, such as scouting. It is used to teach self-reliance
and teamwork. Camping is also used as an inexpensive form of accommodation for
people attending large open air events such as sporting meetings and music
festivals. Organizers often provide a field and other basic amenities.

MOUNTAINEERING
Regardless of the length of the trip which can range from a few hours to
multi-day expeditions, mountaineering is more physically demanding than hiking.
Mountains often provide a mixed terrain (with the presence of rock, ice and
snow), so climbers need to be able to navigate through a wide variety of
conditions.
Depending on the case, mountaineering may involve using technical
equipment and combining a series of related skills like scrambling, climbing,
glacier travel, ice climbing or mixed climbing.
SCOUTING
Scout Network is the fifth and final section of the Scouting movement. From
the time of Baden-Powell, there have been arrangements for young people who
wanted to continue after their time in the Scout Section, and in 1967, Venture
Scouts were formed from the existing Senior Scout and Rover Scout Sections.
Activities and Games can be an important teaching tool. Whether you are
teaching kids, teenagers, or adults, people learn best when they have the
opportunity to do, to participate, and to experience the principles being taught.
Research indicates we learn best when more senses are involved in the learning
process. When groups participate in an activity, they have the opportunity to
reinforce learning through hearing, seeing, touching, and the brain is further
stimulated through social interaction and strategy. Most importantly, activities and
games are FUN, so the learners want to participate.
Even when the purpose of a game or activity is merely to entertain,
participants gain significant benefits through social interaction, team building,
stress relief, and problem solving.

HIKING
Hiking, walking in nature as a recreational activity. Especially among those
with sedentary occupations, hiking is a natural exercise that promotes physical
fitness, is economical and convenient, and requires no special equipment. Because
hikers can walk as far as they want, there is no physical strain unless they walk
among hills or mountains.
Many persons walk alone, mainly on weekends or holidays, but youth clubs
and other groups arrange rambles, or hikes. The normal length of the walk
undertaken is 7 to 12 miles (11 to 19 km) for a half day or 12 to 20 miles (19 to 32
km) for a full day. Those organized rambles, combining exercise with enjoyment of
the countryside, are in country districts surrounding large towns and follow a
planned route. Most densely populated European towns have hiking trails outside
them.
