National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE) is a test taken by Grade 9 students all

over the Philippines providing information for career awareness and guidance, and self-

assessment of junior high school students as part of the K to 12 Curriculum of Basic Education

Program. This NCAE result has a significant contribution on students on deciding the track they

want to pursue for their future.

The importance of the test is to help the students to determine which courses they should

look at for college. The purpose of the NCAE is to help students determine which courses they

should study and what sort of career they are best suited for. Like many standardized tests, the

NCAE measures students' general scholastic knowledge.

According to the former Department of Education Secretary. Mr. Jesli A. Lapus, the

NCAE mainly seeks to guide graduating students on what career lath is fitted for them. It also

aimed at determining the best-suited college courses for the examinees after graduation from

high school National Career Assessment Examination was first established through Presidential

Decree No. 146 as National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) generating helpful

information about track and strand for students. The mentioned law seeks to maintain good

quality of education and for different purposes as it can be used as a prerequisite on admission

for college.

PD No. 146 was thereby abolished through Republic Act No. 7731 due to controversies

and issues encountered during its implementation. Year 2006 where NCEE was reconducted,

enhanced and re-introduced as National Career Assessment Examination.

According to the Department of Education (DepEd), NCAE basically aims to determine

the learner’s aptitude and occupational interests on any of the Senior High School Tracks. Ross

(2015) One of the reasons the NCAE was developed was to address the issue of unemployment

due to workers getting mismatched with the wrong careers. The hope is that by determining

which careers they are ideally suited for, students can plan a course of study that will give them

the skills and education they will need for their ideal careers.

Moreover, according to a research study, as teachers enhances the knowledge of the

students in the field of the study they are teaching, they also helping them on choosing of their

career tracks. Furthermore, knowing the results of NCAE of each student, instructors may help

the students to be more focus on the fields and cater a better learning experience for students.

However, other students are not only depending on NCAE result as it is only part of the

bigger picture in determining the best career for them. Others are depending based on their skills,

talents and interest while others are depending on other factor such as on their financial stability.

But for those who are not well decided on their career, NCAE result can also be helpful for them.

Review of Related Literature

Accordingly, job skills mismatch is a major challenge at present (DOLE, 2010). A large

number of trained graduates are left unemployed or underemployed because they do not fit the

requirements of the job market (Lapus, 2002). This has ensued in joblessness and excess supply

of college graduates in white-collar jobs while there are limited number of available work force

which has the skill needed by the employer.

Kenni (2007) conducted a research paper entitled "choosing a career". The study

determined the main objective of administering the NCAE at assessing the possible career tracks

of each student. This helped the students decide at the course they would likely to succeed in.

Students have a lot of a career option in their mind. Parents have also career options for their

child. But with the results of NCAE, students and parents can better decide on what career path

to choose where their child would likely to meet success.

Bas &Espinas (2008) believe that NCAE could greatly help them in becoming what they

really wanted in life. Most f them do not have concrete plans yet on what career they will pursue

and in most cases; they enrol in courses that are presently in demand or get in to the field chosen

by parents and friend. The high school students need guidance to identify their strengths and

talents so they will be places in the field where they may excel and where these talents are

maximized. Related Studies Previously conducted studies were reviewed by the researchers as

they were deemed relevant to the study to be undertaken.

In the work provided by Canvel et al (2007).It was emphasized in his article that the

students need to be efficient with his knowledge and expertise. Thus the National Career

Assessment Examination (NCAE) is endorsed by the Department of Education to assist them

wisely in organizing their ideas. It is believed that that this would facilitate them in attaining new

methods that would benefit them during the examination.

Significance of the study

This study deals with the impact of the NCAE result to the decision of Grade 11 to their

chosen track. The researcher that the result of this undertaking would be of great benefit to the

students and to other fields such as:

Researchers – other researchers can use the study for other improvements and for other purposes.

Students- the result will help them know the importance of NCAE. Moreover, the study will

serve as an additional future reference to other researchers and lastly, the researchers which the

findings of the study will be advantageous to her as a reader also. The result of the study will

help inform the teachers to determine the appropriate track for their students and will help them

guide their students. The study will be a great help for the researcher’s

Scope and Limitations

The researcher is focusing only on Grade 11 students of Camp Tinio National High

School to know how NCAE result can be their basis on their chosen track and strand on Senior

High. The study will be conducted in Camp Tinio National High School on S.Y. 2019-2020.

Definition of Terms

Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) - Basic Education Curriculum (BEC), is a form of tool

which will stand as one point of learning areas adequate for the development of competencies

starting from Basic education up to the second level of which is renounced as High School.

NCAE- National Career Assessment Examination or NCAE is a test taken by high school

students in the Philippines that determines their strengths in different career fields.

Prerequisite - something that is necessary to an end or to the carrying out of a function.

Strand- is a consistent thread running through a course offer irrespective of its subject content.

Mismatch-is a failure to correspond or match; a discrepancy.
