ME-351A: Design Tutorial 01

1.0 The outrigger of a traveling crane used for loading ships is

shown in Fig. 1. The beam AB weighs 2 kN. The boom BC is
made of a square section as shown in Fig. 2 with l=b=350 mm
and t=10 mm. The 2 kN carriage is symmetric about its load
line and can travel in the range (2 m  s  8m). The maximum
weight of the container the crane is expected to handle is W
kN. The connections at A, B and C can be assumed as pin joints
(e.g. Fig. 3) and you can assume these joints to be frictionless.
The sections are made of steel for which the yield strength is
450 MPa and elastic modulus is 200 GPa. Determine the lowest
factor of safety for buckling in plane of the figure (x-y) and out
of the plane of the figure.

2. The stepped cylindrical member shown in Fig. 4 is subjected to a bending moment (M), an axial
tensile load of 8 kN and a torque of 40 N.m. Determine the factor of safety at points A, B and C
using the Modified Mohr theory. The member is made of a brittle material with S ut of 170 MPa
and Suc of 680 MPa. For each case (A, B & C), clearly indicate the stress states in the 1-2 plane
along with the failure envelope. D=26 mm and d=20 mm and the fillet radius is 3 mm.
