How do we rename a decimal as a fraction?

To rename 0.5 and 0.25 as fractions, we can use regions.

Here is another way to rename a decimal as a fraction.
Write the decimal as a fraction with a denominator of 10 or
100. Then divide the numerator and denominator by their
greatest common factor (GCF) to change the fraction to lowest
terms.

Step 1 Rename 0.8 as a fraction with


denominator of 10

0.8 = 10

Step 2 Find the “Greatest Common Factor”


(GCF) of the numerator and
denominator
How do we find the greatest common factor of 2
numbers? First we find the prime factorization of both
numbers using the factor tree

Step 3 Divide the numerator and denominator by the
GCF
8 8 ÷2 4

10 10÷2 5

write it first as a fraction with a denominator of 10 or
100. Then divide the numerator and denominator by
their greatest common factor (GCF) to change the
fraction to lowest terms.
