PROBLEM:

Determine the safe span that 100 mm x 150 mm purlins would have if it has a spacing of 800 mm
on centers to carry a roofing load of 60 Pa and wind load of 1.4 kPa of vertical surface. Allowable bending
stress is 10 MPa. Weight of purlins is 5000 N/m³. Use nominal dimensions only. The roof truss has a pitch
of ¼.

Solution:
1
Tan Ѳ = 2
Ѳ = 26.6°

Wt. of purlins = 0.10 (.15)(L)(5000)

= 75L

x = 0.80 Cos 26.6°

x = 0.72 m

Wt. of Roofing = 60(0.72) L = 43L

Wind load:

Pn = 1+𝑆𝑖𝑛² 26.6°

2 (1400)𝑆𝑖𝑛 26.6°
Pn = 1+𝑆𝑖𝑛² 26.6°

Pn = 1044 Pa

Wind load = 0.80 L (1044) = 835.2 L

W2 = 835.2 L

W1 = 75 L + 43 L

W1 = 118 L

W1 = W2 + W1 Cos 26.6°

Wn = 835.2 L + 118 L Cos 26.6°

Wn = 940.7 L

Wt = 118 L Sin 26.6°

Wt = 52.8 L

PROBLEM:

Determine the maximum safe rather spacing whose dimension are 75 mm x 300 mm x 5m. as
shown, with allowance flexural stress of 15.9 MPa. Consider live load = 770 N/m² , roof and purlin loads =
280 N/m² and weight of rafter is 8 x 10³ N/m³.

Solution:

Triibutary area = 4.53 S

W1 = (770 + 240 + 280)(4.53 S) + 8000(0.075)(0.30)(5)

W1 = 5843.7 S + 900

W2 = W1 Cos 25°

W2 = (5843.7 S + 900) Cos 25°
