HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers

198/1553-HSD 101 02/1 Uen J2B | 2018-05-26

Introduction

1 Introduction

This document describes the HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers feature and its
main benefits and impacts on the WCDMA RAN. The feature is also called
HSDPA-3MC for short in this document.

The HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers feature is an optional feature that

corresponds to 4C-HSDPA in the 3GPP Rel-10 standard. The feature
introduces support for HSDPA multicarrier, with or without 64 QAM, using
three adjacent carriers. This means that simultaneous downlink (DL) High
Speed Downlink Shared Channel (HS-DSCH) transmission from three cells,
with or without 64 QAM, with adjacent carriers, is supported to a given UE
unit. The three cells are located in the same radio node and cover the same
geographical area, that is, the same sector.

1.1 Basic Characteristics

This section describes the basic characteristics of the feature.

Feature identity:
FAJ 121 3909: HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers

Release: Introduced in W15.0 for DU Radio Node, and in W17A

for Baseband Radio Node

Dependencies

This feature requires the following RAN features to be active:

• FAJ 121 1328: Enhanced Layer 2

• FAJ 121 1023: Enhanced Uplink Introduction Package

• FAJ 121 1441: Multi Carrier

For DU Radio Node, this feature also requires the following RAN feature:

• FAJ 121 2709: HSDPA MC Inter DU Joint Scheduling

This feature affects the following RAN feature:

• FAJ 121 3249: Combined Cell

1.2 Benefits
This section describes the benefits of this feature.

HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers

The HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers feature provides the following benefits:

• The feature introduces the support for three simultaneous DL carriers to

one UE unit, which allows for the increased DL peak user throughput. The
L1 transport block bit rate, exploiting 64 QAM and 15 codes on each
carrier, gives a peak rate of 63.3 Mbps. However the DL peak user
throughput can be lower because of radio conditions.

• The feature increases the resource utilization efficiency. It is possible since

3C-HSDPA capable devices can be scheduled on all three carriers.
Thanks to the possibility to transmit data on all three carriers when other
carriers are not used by other users, the capacity that can be handled by
the system is increased compared to single-carrier operation.

1.3 Additional Information

More information about this feature and related topics can be found in the
following documentation:

Feature Operational Description

2 Feature Operational Description

This section describes the HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers feature in more

detail, including network configuration requirements and operation flows.

Physical Channel Structure

The physical channel structure for a UE unit configured with the HSDPA-3MC
and for a UE unit with the HSDPA-MC is different. Two secondary serving HS-
DSCH cells are available and the coding of Channel Quality Indicator (CQI)
and Acknowledgment (ACK) or Negative Acknowledgment (NACK) on the
uplink (UL) HS-DPCCH is changed. The UE sends three CQIs and three
ACKs or NACKs, one for each frequency, on the HS-DPCCH.

Supported RAB Combinations

The HSDPA-3MC is only supported for N × PS Interactive RAB combinations

(N = 1, 2, 3) on EUL/HS with EUL 2ms TTI and 10ms TTI, together with the
EUL-MC. Combinations with, for example, CS Speech or PS Streaming are
therefore not supported.

Reconfiguration to or from HSDPA-3MC

The HSDPA-3MC configuration can be retained in the following cases:

• RAB establishment or RAB release: if the target RAB combination

supports the HSDPA-3MC

• The serving E-DCH/HS-DSCH cell change: if the target cell supports the
HSDPA-3MC

• Inter-Frequency Handover (IFHO): if the target cell supports the

HSDPA-3MC

A reconfiguration from the HSDPA-3MC to the non-HSDPA-3MC can be

performed in the following cases:

• RAB establishment or RAB release: if the target RAB combination does

not support the HSDPA-3MC

• Channel switch: to URA, FACH

• The serving E-DCH/HS-DSCH cell change: if the target cell does not
support the HSDPA-3MC or if Iur is used

• IFHO: if the target cell does not support the HSDPA-3MC

A reconfiguration from the non-HSDPA-3MC to the HSDPA-3MC can be

performed in the following cases:

198/1553-HSD 101 02/1 Uen J2B | 2018-05-26 3

HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers

• RAB establishment or RAB release: if the target RAB combination

supports the HSDPA-3MC

• Channel switch: from URA, FACH, DCH/DCH or DCH/HS

Note: No HS-DSCH throughput-based upswitch or downswitch is available

for triggering a reconfiguration between the non-HSDPA-3MC and the
HSDPA-3MC.

Compressed Mode (CM) is supported for the connections in the

HSDPA-3MC mode. The same CM patterns and activation time are
applied to the radio link in both the secondary serving HS-DSCH cells
as to the radio link in the primary serving HS-DSCH cell when the
HSDPA-3MC connection capability is used.

Operation and Maintenance

7 Operation and Maintenance

This section provides Operation and Maintenance (O&M) information for the
HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers feature.

The HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers feature is an optional feature that is

handled with a license key. One license is available for each radio node.

A UE unit in the HSDPA-3MC mode allocates one HS-user capacity license in

the UE primary serving HS-DSCH cell, but none in the UE secondary serving
HS-DSCH cells. No specific capacity licensing is available regarding the
number of supported HS users in the HSDPA-3MC mode in a cell.

7.1 Activating the Feature

7.1.1 Preconditions
For three HS-DSCH cells to operate in an HSDPA-3MC mode, where one cell
acts as a primary serving HS-DSCH cell and the other two cells act as
secondary serving HS-DSCH cells, for each HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers
connection, the three cells have to fulfill the following conditions:

• The cells need to be HSDPA capable. Refer to the definition in HSDPA

Migration and Activation.

• The cells need to have a valid license, CXC 402 0082, installed in the
radio node.

• The cells need to be configured to be handled by the same Sector MO in

the radio node. For DU Radio Node, this is done by referencing from the
RbsLocalCells MO to the carriers, (the Carrier MO), that belong to
the same sector. For Baseband Radio Node, this is done by referencing
from the NodeBLocalCells MO to the carriers, (the Carrier MO), that
belong to the same sector.

• The cells need to be configured with the same setting for each of the
following radio node parameters:

– queueSelectAlgorithm

– airRateTypeSelector

– schPrioForAbsResSharing

– schMaxDelay

198/1553-HSD 101 02/1 Uen J2B | 2018-05-26 13

HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers

– schWeight

– minBitRate

– minBitRateMinCqi

• The cells need to be configured with adjacent frequencies in the RNC. The
channel spacing between any adjacent frequencies in the HSDPA Multi-
Carrier 3 Carriers connection is less than or equal to 5 MHz.

• The cells need to have the same timing, that is, the tCell RNC
parameter must be set to the same value.

• The FAJ 121 1328: Enhanced Layer 2 feature must be activated.

• The FAJ 121 1331: Support for 64 QAM feature is not obligatory for the
HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers feature. However, the HSDPA Multi-
Carrier 3 Carriers in combination with the 64 QAM is required to support
the peak bit rate. The three carriers are configured in the same way
regarding the connection capability. Configuring one carrier with the 64
QAM and the other carriers without the 64 QAM is not possible.

• Either all three cells support FAJ 121 1128: Transmit Diversity, or none of
them supports Transmit Diversity feature. If Transmit Diversity is activated
in one of the cells, it must also be activated in the other cells.

For DU Radio Node, the three cells also have to fulfill the following condition:

• The FAJ 121 2709: HSDPA Multi Carrier Inter DU Joint Scheduling feature
must be activated.

In addition, for a cell to act as a primary serving HS-DSCH cell for the HSDPA
Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers connection, the following conditions must be met:

• The FAJ 121 1023: Enhanced Uplink Introduction Package feature must
be activated.

• The FAJ 121 1441: Multi Carrier feature must be activated.

• The HS-DSCH cell has to be EUL-capable. Refer to the definition in

WCDMA Uplink.

• The uarfcnDl parameter of the primary serving HS-DSCH cell is defined

in the WcdmaCarrier MO.

One or all cells in the HS-DSCH cell set can be configured to work as the
primary serving HS-DSCH cell.

When the cell configuration prevents it from acting as a primary serving HS-
DSCH cell for an HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers connection, if possible,
defining a coverage relation to another cell, able to act as a primary serving
HS-DSCH cell, is recommended.

14 198/1553-HSD 101 02/1 Uen J2B | 2018-05-26

Operation and Maintenance

Note: • One cell acting as the primary serving HS-DSCH cell can have a
cell relation established to more than two secondary serving HS-
DSCH cells.

• One secondary serving HS-DSCH cell can be referenced from

more than one primary serving HS-DSCH cell.

7.1.2 Activating
To activate the HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers, do the following:

• For DU Radio Node, activate the feature on the cell level by setting the
RbsLocalCell::featureStateHsdpa3Mc parameter to ACTIVATED.

Note: • If the parameter is set to ACTIVATED only for one of the three
HS-DSCH cells, configured to operate in HSDPA-3MC mode,
all UE units configured with HSDPA-3MC use that cell as a
primary serving HS-DSCH cell and the other cells as
secondary serving HS-DSCH cells.

• If the parameter is set to ACTIVATED for all three cells, the

UE units configured with HSDPA-3MC are distributed among
the three cells according to the HSDPA IFLS function.

• Setting the RbsLocalCell::featureStateHsdpa3Mc

parameter to ACTIVATED in a sector with a single carrier or
with two carriers has no impact.

• For Baseband Radio Node, activate the feature on the cell level by setting
the NodeBLocalCell::featCtrlHsdpa3Mc attribute to ON.

Note: • If the parameter is set to ON only for one of the three HS-
DSCH cells, configured to operate in HSDPA-3MC mode, all
UE units configured with HSDPA-3MC use that cell as a
primary serving HS-DSCH cell and the other cells as
secondary serving HS-DSCH cells.

• If the parameter is set to ON for all three cells, the UE units

configured with HSDPA-3MC are distributed among the three
cells according to the HSDPA IFLS function.

• Setting the NodeBLocalCell::featCtrlHsdpa3Mc

parameter to ON in a sector with a single carrier or with two
carriers has no impact.

When the HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers is activated, the following read-only

parameters can be used for checks:

• For DU Radio Node, the NodeBFunction::licenseStateHsdpa3Mc

parameter is ENABLED if the license is valid.

198/1553-HSD 101 02/1 Uen J2B | 2018-05-26 15

HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers

• For Baseband Radio Node, the FeatureState attribute serviceState

is set to OPERABLE if the license is valid and the feature is activated.

• The MultiCarrier::hsdpa3McSupport parameter monitors if the cell

supports the HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers, that is, if the activation of the
HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers is successful.

The HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers feature is not supported over Iur.

More information about licenses can be found in Licenses and Hardware

Activation Codes in Ericsson Software Model.

7.2 Deactivating the Feature

7.2.1 Preconditions
This feature has no preconditions for deactivating.

7.2.2 Deactivating
To deactivate the HSDPA Multi-Carrier 3 Carriers feature, do the following:

• For DU Radio Node, deactivate the feature by setting the

RbsLocalCell::featureStateHsdpa3Mc parameter to
DEACTIVATED for the selected cells.

• For Baseband Radio Node, deactivate the feature by setting the

NodeBLocalCell::featCtrlHsdpa3Mc attribute to OFF for the
selected cells.

More information about licenses can be found in Licenses and Hardware

Activation Codes in Ericsson Software Model.

7.3 Engineering Guidelines

The purpose of this section is to provide additional information on practical
engineering aspects about how to use parameters to achieve certain
behaviors.

7.3.1 WCDMA Frequency Configuration

The feature requires all the WCDMA frequencies that are ready to act as
primary serving HS-DSCH cells in the network to be configured in
WcdmaCarrier MOs. Retrieved WcdmaCarrier::uarfcnDl values are
