Curve
Tracing
Symmetry about x-axis: If all the powers of 'y' in the
1. equation are even then the curve is symmetrical about
the x-axis.

E.g. : y2 = 4ax ; a > 0

Symmetry about y-axis: If all the powers of 'x' in
2. the equation are even then the curve is
symmetrical about the y-axis.

E.g. : x2 = 4ay ; a>0

Symmetry about both axis: If all the powers of 'x' and 'y' in
3. the equation are even, the curve is symmetrical about the
axis of 'x' as well as 'y'.

E.g. : x2 + y2 = a2
Symmetry about both axis: If the equation of curve remains
4. unchanged by interchanging ‘x’ and ‘y’ then the curve is
symmetric about the line y=x.

E.g. : x3 + y3 = 3axy
Symmetry in opposite quadrants: If the equation of the curve
5. remains unaltered when 'x' and 'y' are replaced by ‘-x’ and ‘-y’
respectively, then there is symmetry in opposite quadrants.

E.g. : xy = c2 E.g. : xy = -c2

Use of Graphical Transformations: If graphs of standard
6. functions are known then concepts of graphical
transformations help in curve tracing.
Use of AOD: The increasing decreasing nature, points of
7. maxima minima, concavity can be studied using the concepts
studied in AOD.

A. 18 𝜋 B. 27 𝜋
C. 36 𝜋 D. 45 𝜋
Example Let f(x) = Maximum {x2, (1-x)2, 2x(1-x)}, where 0 < x < 1.
