“The Filipino Values and Nationalism”

During our elementary and high school days we used to have our flag
ceremony daily. We even got to memorize the “Panunumpa ng Katapatan sa
Watawat ng Pilipinas (Pledge of Allegiance)” as it is always included in the
ceremony. I remember the last part of it which says that “…Na pinakikilos ng
sambayanang Maka-Diyos, Makakalikasan, Makatao, at Makabansa.” It is
said that these four words encompass what we call “The Good Citizenship
Values”. The question is, Are we doing our part as a good Filipino citizen through
encompassing these characteristics within ourselves? I believe that being a good
Filipino citizen is coupled to the word “nationalism”. We could show our love in
our dear country if we would be able to be a good Filipino citizen. Filipinos are
known for being religious. We must always put God first in every decision we
make. Through this, kindness and humanity will prevail. We must also respect
the life of people around us. Selfishness will give us nothing good. Let’s value our
family and all the people around us. We must lend our helping hands to every
Filipino. With this simple deed, we could help in building our nation.

In our country, freedom, peace and justice is a big issue. Many people are
being deprived with their rights. The government whose priority must be
Filipinos, is even patronizing other country than Philippines itself. Sadly, even
some of the politicians failed to protect the countrymen. I must say that some of
them are just “mema-sabi at mema-gawa”. Politicians must set a good example
to every Filipino.

Let’s also treat each other equally. Whatever your physical, mental, socio-
economic status, we don’t have the right to discriminate others. Instead, we must
lift up each other.
I am a Filipino citizen who was born in other country. I was raised by my
Filipino mother and father. I went here in the Philippines way back 2003. I don’t
know how to speak Tagalog that time. As far as I remember, I used to speak
English before. But, look at me now, I even love to speak in Tagalog than to speak
in English even in school. I think it is just right to practice your own language
first especially if you’re here in our own country. In Girl Scouting, I learn how to
serve the community and also my fellow Girl Scouts. I am beyond grateful for
being in a tuition fee university and also being granted by a government-funded
scholarship. That’s why if ever I would be a registered nurse and doctor, I would
also choose to serve our country, Philippines. My mindset is that, I must take
good care of our fellow Filipino first before others. Just to share, I think one of
the recent large step I made to help our beloved country, is to have my voter
registration done.

With all the challenges our country is facing nowadays, we must

strengthen our nationalistic side. Let’s spread awareness!! We, the youth, are the
hope of this nation. Let’s do our part to make Philippines a better one.
