Subject ID: EC-1000 (Section–E/ F/ G/ H) Subject: Basic Electronics
Maximum marks:30 Time: 2 hours
Instructions:
1. All questions are of 5 marks each.
2. All parts of a single question must be written in one continuous place.
3. Due credit will be awarded for neatness in drawing and labeling circuit diagrams.
1. a) Do the following conversion: i) (346) = (? ) and (375) = (? )
1+
b) Simplify the following Boolean Function (F) with the don’t care conditions d. Then
implement the reduced expression using NAND gates only. 2+
F  x, y , z    2,3,4,6,7  d  x, y , z    0,1,5
c) Perform the following subtraction operation using 2’s complement method 2
i) (01111011) − (01100011) = (? )
ii) (00110011) − (00110111) = (? )

2. a) Show that the dual of XOR is its complement.

1+
b) Convert each of the following expression into sum-of-product and product-of-sum
a. ( + )( + ̅ ) 2+
x' x x  y' y  z '
b.
c) Given the Boolean functions = ∏(2,3,4) and = ∏(1,11,12). Show that 2
i) the Boolean function = + contains the sum of minterms of and .
ii) The Boolean function = contains only the minterms common to
and .

3. a) Differentiate between sequential and combinational logic.

1+
b) Convert a JK flip flop into a D flip flop and write its truth table.
c) Design an Asynchronous Decade Counter Using JK flip-flop. Draw the waveform 1+
for each flip-flop output.
3

4. a) Write the difference between latch and flip-flop. 1

b) Convert the SR into a JK flip flop. +1
c) What is the difference between counter and register? +1
d) Draw a 3-bit register. +1
+1
e) A 4-bit modulo-16 ripple counter uses J K flip flop. If propagation delay of each flip
flop is 50 ns, what is the maximum clock frequency that can be used?

5. a) Explain in two sentences, why bridge rectifier is better than full-wave rectifier
1
using centre tap transformer.
b) A half-wave rectifier circuit with a 1-kΩ load operates from a 240-V (rms) 50-Hz +
household supply through a 20-to-1 step-down transformer. It uses a silicon diode
that can be modelled to have a 0.7-V drop for any current. What is the peak voltage 4

of the rectified output? For what fraction of the cycle does the diode conduct? What
is the average output voltage? What is the average current in the load? Assume diode
resistance to be negligible.
