Aspiring Maritime students’ Body Mass Index and their awareness on Medical
Examination
Key Point # 1:
Body Mass Index
-According to Bridger R.S. (2011). Seafaring is known to be a demanding occupation but
the implications of ageing seafarers are poorly understood. A cross-sectional study carried out on
a single vessel during a summer development. The best predictor or work ability was the
interaction between BMI and age, with increased BMI having a deleterious effect on work ability
in older employees doing moderately demanding work.

Key Point # 2:
Medical Examination
-According to Jensen, O.C (2001), The seafarers completed a short questionnaire in
medical clinics in connection with their mandatory health examination. The congruence between
the answers in test and re-test was 94%-100%, apart from the questions on the skip’s tonnage.
The work load in connection with the collection of data in the clinic was considered reasonably
low 8.7% of the injured during their latest tour of duty.

Key Point # 3:
Maritime Students’ awareness
-According to Caguimbal, D.A. et al (2013), This research work was pursued to gain
insights regarding the level of awareness of the maritime students on the outcome based
Education through its advantage and disadvantages. Result showed that the respondents are
aware that well-defined assessment criteria makes it clear to both assessors and learners how
assessment will take place as one of the advantage of outcome-based Education.

Medical Examination
Medical Examination had impact for aspiring Maritime. According to Jensen, O.C.
(2001), “The seafarers completed a short questionnaire in medical clinics in connection with
their mandatory health examination.” This means for future researcher and aspiring Maritime
clearly have a Medical Examination/ health examination and it’s mandatory. Medical
requirements and Examination procedures and to ensure that the medical certificates which are
issued to seafarers are valid indicator of their medical fitness for duties they will perform.
