110305/CEL-303/3113/CE-3501: Strength of Materials (GS & NGS)
Time: Three Hours Max. Marks: 70

Note: Attempt all five questions. Part a, b, and c of each question is compulsory and
carries 2, 2, and 3 marks respectively. Out of parts d and e (7 marks each) any one of
them is to be attempted. Missing data, if any, may be assumed suitably.

1. a) Discuss in brief the concept of elastic body. CO 1

b) Discuss in brief Mohr's circle for plane state of stress. CO 2
c) Explain Poisson’s ratio and establish a relation between Modulus of Elasticity CO 1
and Modulus of Rigidity.
d) For a given material, Young’s modulus is 1 × 10 5 N/mm2 and modulus of CO 1
rigidity is 4 × 104 N/mm2. Find the bulk modulus and lateral contraction of a
round bar of 50 mm diameter and 2.5 m length when stretched by 2.5 mm.
e) At a point in a body, there are two mutually perpendicular stresses of 80 CO 2
N/mm2 and 40 N/mm2, of tensile nature. Each stress is accompanied by a
shear stress of 60 N/mm2. Determine the normal, shear and resultant stress in
an oblique plane at an angle of 45° with the axis of the major principal stress.

2. a) What is meant by pure bending? CO 3

b) Describe assumptions made in deducing bending stress formula. CO 3
c) Deduce section modulus for a circular cross section of diameter D. CO 3
d) A beam of rectangular cross section 50 mm wide and 150 mm deep is used as CO 3
a cantilever 6 m long and subjected to a uniformly distributed load of 2 N/m
over the centre length. Determine the bending stress at 50 mm from the top
fibre, at the mid-span of the beam and the maximum bending stress.
e) A simply supported beam of span 10 m carries a central concentrated load of CO3
20 kN. If the cross section of the beam is a rectangle 40 mm × 50 mm, what
is the maximum shear stress set up in the beam?
CO 3
3. a) Explain polar moment of inertia torsional rigidity. CO 3
b) Differentiate between angle of twist and shear strain in a circular shaft.
c) Compare open and closed coil helical springs. CO 3
d) A solid shaft is to transmit 400 kW at 100 rpm. If the shear stress is not to CO 3
exceed 80 N/mm2, find the diameter of the shaft. If this shaft were to be
replaced by a hollow shaft of the same material and length with an internal
diameter of 0.6 times the external diameter, what percentage of saving is
possible?
e) A steel cylindrical shell 3 m long which is closed at its ends, had an internal CO 5
diameter of 1.5 m and a wall thickness of 20 mm. Calculate the
circumferential and longitudinal stresses induced and also the change in
dimensions of the shell if it is subjected to an internal pressure of 1.0 N/mm 2.

#1/2
Assume E = 200 kN/mm2. Poisson’s ratio = 0.3.
4. a) Define effective length of Columns for different end conditions. CO 4
b) Compare expression for Euler buckling load for a short column with different CO 4
end conditions
c) Describe Rankine’s formula for finding safe load for columns. CO 4
d) A solid round bar 4.5 m long and 60 mm in diameter was found to extend 4.6 CO 4
mm under a tensile load of 60 kN. This bar is used as a strut with both ends
fixed. Determine the buckling load for the bar and also the safe load taking
factor of safety as 4.
e) A hollow cylindrical column of 150 mm external diameter and 15 mm thick, CO 4
3 m long is hinged at one end and fixed at the other end. Find the ratio of
Euler’s and Rankine’s critical load. E = 8 × 104 N/mm2, fc= 550 N/mm2 and
Rankine’s constant = 1/1,600.

5. a) Describe double integration method for computing slope and deflections. CO6
CO 6
b) What is a conjugate beam and how do you determine loading on it?
c) Explain moment area theorems? How is deflection and slope determined CO6
using these theorems?
d) A cantilever of length 2a is carrying a load of W at the free end and another CO 6
load W at its centre. Determine slope and deflection of the cantilever beam at
the free end by using any method.
e) A simply supported beam AB of span 10 m carries a point load of 15 kN, 8 m
from end A. The value of Iof the left half of the beam is 4I and that of right CO 6
half is I. Find (i) slope at end A, (ii) deflection at the mid-span and (iii)
