The conflict that I chose for IDU was the Vietnam war, and I will be analyzing a poem that

improves and enhances my understanding of the Vietnam War itself. This poem isn’t like a
normal fun of laughter poem, on the other hand, this one is giving a deep message and an
unusual/discomfort feeling of what the war was like. The reason that I chose this poem, and
the text type as a poem was because I think that when there is a poem involved it brings out
a lot of emotions in different ways, so you can use literary devices and this will make your
text very interesting and in this poem, it clearly shows different emotions in different forms
and there are facts that are involved.

In one of my classes, English to be more precise we were learning about conflict, of course.
We were focusing on this amazing book that was written by Elie himself, and he was writing
his experience when he was in Auschwitz, and it was then we were looking at a poem that
was written in the book itself. We were trying to look for different literary devices in a stanza
or even the whole poem. So as this is a skill, when looking at the poem Facing It. In that
poem there are so many examples of literary devices used, imagery and many other things
that make this poem ideal for the Vietnam War. The first line my black face fades away, into
the granite, it basically is saying that there is a not of granite around him and on him. Since
his face is so dark because of the granite it then camouflages into the powder itself. “ I am
stone”. “ I am flesh”. This sentence is basically straight forward, since this person has no
more emotions left because of the horrific incidents that have happened. “I go down the
58,022 names, half expecting to find my own” in this line the writer is trying to say that this
person has luckily survived the war and he probably doesn’t deserve to be living this, but he
is. He mentions the name Andrew Johnson, and after that line he says the he say a booby
trap flash by, so this probably could define that Andrew was a soldier and they were in both
in an accident that was caused by a booby trap, and the person luckily just made it but on
the other hand Andrew didn’t.

In another subject, Music, we had to make our own composition relating to our conflict. We
had to include things like a Major or Minor, different notes and other musical elements. But
the reason I am mentioning that Music also helped me to understand my text type was
because people can write conflicts or basically anything using arts and if you think about it, a
poem is somewhat of an artistic text type, so you can include different tones, you can have
different ways of adding emotions and things that you would find less or not at all in an essay
for example. So in the poem Facing It, this person was part of the Vietnam war, and he is
talking the after cause, so ended and now he went to the memorial. But also, the
communication. In music we learnt to communicate using music and using musical elements
we had tasks relating to that. So, if you take a look at the poem “ Facing It”, the author is
using different literary devices to prove his point. In this case, he is trying to communicate
that he is in a memorial site, trying to remember the incidents that had happened to him.
“Names shimmer on a woman's blouse but when she walks away the names stay on the
wall.” - This is a line from the poem, and you can understand what the author is trying to
communicate. Is that there was a woman behind him or in from, and then the names
basically reflected off her blouse, and he thought that he was living in a dream world, but
when went away, the man realised that this was really happening and this wasn’t a joke, or
any type of dream. This writer is using a lot of literary devices and using some of his
experiences to give the poem some sparks, and this is another way of communicating to the
audience. Like I said before, in music we learnt to communicate to the audience or the
people, and everyone has a different way of communicating.
“ I’m am in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial again depending on the light to make a
difference”
This sentence, the author is saying that the light is another way of saying that there is hope.
This author is trying to say that the person who is in the memorial was a victim and he was
probably trapped or something dark must have happened where he was hoping for some
light, and right now he is using that same analogy where he can’t see the names, and he
asked for some sort of light so that he can see the names.

In conclusion, wars are very dangerous and this author is representing all of this in a poem
that's not that long, and normally in poems, you won’t always get information, unlike an
essay. So this poem has taught me that you can add a lot of facts in something that you
least expect it. There has been a usage of a lot of literary to explain the facts and the
information that this author has and this is probably the most creative way of doing this sort
of thing.
Yusef Komunyakaa wrote this poem aliter-ate but it would have been cool if he wrote it
maybe right after the war.
