Social studies embodies the entirety of mankind itself.

Every hobby, passion, and love

has its origin, which means that every student loves social studies, even if they do not know it.

History is the longest, most interesting story ever written, but it is often overlooked. Rustled

between math papers and English essays, to some, social studies is nothing more than a necessity

to graduate. My goal as a secondary history teacher is to change that and inspire all students to

embrace the content of history. I also aim to provide access to appropriate education for every

student, with or without special needs.

As an interpreter of American Sign Language, I can often break the boundaries that

language sets. With enthusiasm and patience, I can also provide every child with access to

unique and appropriate education. Howard Gardner’s research exposed me to the many ways

students absorb information, and as a teacher I would incorporate each of his multiple

intelligences into my lessons. Through differentiation of instruction, I will provide a challenging

curriculum that promotes higher order learning. I also stress the importance of my students

respecting their peers accommodations. Respect is key to managing a classroom, and I believe it

is only with respect that every child can succeed. In my classroom, no child will be labeled

“different.” With my asset based education methods, I will be a role model to my students to

build up their self confidence, and will show my class to do the same to their peers. With respect

for each student's individual needs, my class will meet and exceed expectations for their grade

and academic level.

Social studies is crucial for both students and society because it is the heart of the study

of diversity. Through teaching this key curriculum, my students will learn to celebrate

multiculturalism. In my practice, achievements of every society will be represented with varied

perspectives. Similarly, a world focus will allow my students to better understand current events.

Going hand in hand with this is my belief in the Cultural Difference Theory. As a culturally

responsive educator, I will close the gap that stereotyping often creates, and will not limit a

student’s abilities to any label, and will develop an understanding of the parents and

communities in which my students live.

Though I teach about the past, the future is catching up with us. Because of this, I will

use technology regularly in class. Media can be an effective tool for collaboration, inquiry

learning, homework, and assessments. With the help of SMART boards, computers, and

applications, I can use modern technology to engage students on difficult topics such as map

skills, geography, and economics. In my class, I intend to utilize the vast amount of new aged

tools that I have access to in such a critical time for education.

As a reflective practitioner, I hope to help build educated citizens who will go on to make

decisions that will benefit society. I believe the New York State Standards for Special Education

and for Social Studies will help me do that. I not only wish to create high performing students,

but informed citizens, and the key to that is learning from the mistakes of our ancestors. Through

the education of our past, I will enlighten children to create a brighter future.
