ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC & PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES

POSITION PAPER

School Uniforms Should not be Banned

By: Jescel Mae P. Dulay

Wearing school uniforms is such a long-time issue in the

Philippines. Some of the students do not follow the school’s

rules and regulations for not wearing their prompt and complete

uniform inside the school premise. But I am not a deviant

student, I believe that the rules and regulations of the school,

especially the wearing of school uniform is any student’s guide

and reminder in making them a better student and will actually

train them for their future employment.

However, as I said before, some students intentionally

neglects to wear their proper uniforms. Others consider that

students’ freedom of expression is restricted by school

uniforms. Students who have to wear the same clothing as every

other student in their school are not able to express their

individuality and creativity.

This is a shallow and unacceptable reason. As stated in

DepED Order 46, s. 2008, students are discouraged from wearing

expensive (signature or designer brands) or flashy clothes,

tight-fitting pants/blouses/dresses, mini-skirts, short shorts,

blouses with plunging necklines, hip-hop pants for boys, and

sleepwear. We should not let the students wear whatever kind of

attire they wanted. It is like tolerating them for violating the

law. After all, school is an educational institution where

formal training and learnings are given to the students. Hence,

students like me must obey the rules and regulations or else,

there will be a corresponding consequence or punishment. Aside

from the punishment they may get from not wearing the proper

uniform, it may also affect their behavior for their employment

after graduation. It may cause them difficulties in following

their boss or employer.

Going to school is not a joke and it requires proper

behavior for us to be considered as a student and eventually, a

good one for the society to look up. Remember that school is a

formal institution so we should do as the school says. It is not

being a puppet but an obedient and prompt student as well as

being a good citizen and employee in the future.
