SEMESTER END EXAMINATIONS – JANUARY 2017

Course & Branch : B.E: Civil Engineering Semester : V
Subject : Transportation Engineering - II Max. Marks : 100
Subject Code : CV502 Duration : 3 Hrs

Instructions to the Candidates:

 Answer one full question from each unit.

UNIT - I
1. a) Write briefly about the application of long welded rails in context of CO1 (05)
high speed rail network in India.
b) Draw a typical cross section of a permanent way on single line curved CO1 (05)
track with various indicators for effective functioning.
c) Chalk out the problems caused and its effects on a railway track due to CO1 (10)
keep of rails of trains. Enumerate the different remedial measures to
be adopted.

2. a) Discuss the factors on which the sleeper density depends and how the CO1 (05)
sleeper density is expressed.
b) What materials as ballast you would suggest for high speed tracks and CO1 (05)
why?
c) Calculate the maximum permissible train load that can be pulled by a CO1 (10)
locomotive having four pairs of driving wheels carrying an axle load of
30 tonnes each. The train has to run at a speed of 90 kmph on a
straight level broad gauge track.
Also calculate the reduction in speed, if train has to climb a gradient of
1 in 150. If train climbs the gradient with a 1 ◦ curve, then what would
be the reduction in speed?
UNIT - II
3. a) Calculate the maximum permissible trains load that can be pulled by CO2 (10)
locomotive having four pair of driving wheels carrying an axle load of
24 tonnes each. The train has to run at a speed of 80 kms per hour
on a straight level track (BG). Calculate the reduction in speed, if train
has to climb a gradient of 1 in 200. If train climbs the gradient at 2 0
curve that what would be reduction in speed.
b) What is the necessity of points and crossings? With a neat diagram CO2 (10)
explain the component parts of a right hand turnout (split switch).

4. a) Find out the steepest gradient on a straight track using the following CO2 (10)
data, for a train having 20 wagons with weight of each wagon being 18
tonnes, rolling resistance of wagon being 2.5kg/tone, speed of the train
being 50km/h, weight of the locomotive with tender being 120 tonnes,
tractive effort of locomotive being 12 tonnes and rolling resistance of
locomotive being 3.5kg/tonne.
b) Explain the following terms with relevant expressions wherever CO2 (10)
applicable: i) Grade Compensation ii) Ruling gradient iii) Momentum

gradient iv) Pusher or helper gradients v) Gradients at station yards

UNIT-III
5. a) Summarize the various factors governing the selection of site for an CO3 (06)
airport
b) Determine the best direction for orienting the runway from the wind CO3 (06)
data tabulated below. If the permitted deviation of wind from the
direction of landing and take-off is 33.750, determine the percentage of
time in a year during which the runway can be safely used.

Wind Duration, Wind Duration, Wind Duration, Wind Duration,

Direction Percent Direction Percent Direction Percent Direction Percent
N 1.7 E 5.8 S 1.8 W 8.8
NNE 0.6 ESE 10.3 SSW 1.1 WNW 14.4
NE 0.3 SE 8.1 SW 0.5 NW 10.1
ENE 7.2 SSE 3.9 WSW 7.1 NNW 5.7
c) List the assumed conditions under which the basic runway length is CO3 (08)
determined? Sketch and explain the normal take-off case of
determining the basic runway length.

6. a) What is a Taxiway? What are the various factors affecting the layout of CO3 (06)
taxiway.
b) Discuss briefly the runway geometrics as per ICAO classification of CO3 (06)
airports.
c) An airport is planned at an elevation of 720 m above MSL. The monthly CO3 (08)
mean of maximum and average daily temperatures for the hottest
month at the site are 340C and 250C respectively. The effective
gradient is 0.15%. Determine the length of runway required at the
proposed site if the basic runway length is 2300 m.

UNIT-IV
7. a) With a neat sketch, explain the characteristics and rubble mound CO4 (05)
breakwater.
b) List and explain the facilities required at a major port. CO4 (05)
c) Give the various details to be analyzed regarding to the wave action on CO4 (10)
a marine structure.

8. a) Enumerate the need and function of wharf and jetties CO4 (05)
b) Explain the advantages and disadvantages of enclosed wet docks. CO4 (05)
c) With a neat sketch explain the various features of a port. CO4 (10)

UNIT-V
9. a) List the various advantages of mass transportation. CO5 (06)
b) Briefly explain the relationship between land use and transportation. CO5 (06)
c) Write short notes on ITS and list its applications in day to day life. CO5 (08)

10. a) Write a note on at grade and grade separated intersections and CO5 (06)
mention various types of it.
b) Write short notes on various transportation problems in urban centers. CO5 (06)
c) Explain briefly on urban road patterns. CO5 (08)
