Aristotle History

Aristotle of Stagira (l. 384-322 BCE) was

a Greek philosopher who pioneered systematic, scientific
examination in literally every area of human knowledge
and was known, in his time, as "the man who knew
everything" and later simply as "The Philosopher”,
needing no further qualification as his fame was so
widespread. He literally invented the concept of
metaphysics single-handedly when he (or one of his
scribes) placed his book on abstract philosophical
speculation after his book on physics (metaphysics
literally means “after physics”) and standardized in
learning – how information is collected, assimilated and interpreted, and then
communicated – across numerous disciplines.

Nicomachean Ethics

Nicomachean Ethics is a philosophical inquiry into the nature of

the good life for a human being. Aristotle begins the work by
positing that there exists some ultimate good toward which, in the
final analysis, all human actions ultimately aim
Eudaimonia

The necessary characteristics of the ultimate good are that it is complete, final,
self-sufficient and continuous. This good toward which all human actions simplicity or
explicitly aim is happiness‹ in Greek, "eudaimonia," which can also be translated as
blessedness or living well, and which is not a static state of being but a type of activity.

Hedonia

The hedonistic view of well-being is that happiness is the

polar opposite of suffering; the presence of happiness
indicates the absence of pain. Because of this, hedonists
believe that the purpose of life is to maximize happiness,
which minimizes misery. Over the years, hedonism has
developed something of a bad image, as its focus is on
propagating pleasure through any means available,
including sexuality, excessive consumption, alcohol, drugs and other targets of
religious and societal scorn [source: Waterman].
