CONTENT STANDARD
The learner demonstrate understanding of the key concepts of the Rectangular Coordinate System.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learner is able to formulate real-life problem involving the Rectangular Coordinate System.
I – MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS
A. The Cartesian coordinate system consists of two coplanar perpendicular number lines.
B. The horizontal number line is called the x-axis and the vertical number line is the y – axis.
C. The x- and y- axis intersect at the point of origin, and the intersection forms four regions called
quadrants.
D. The system establishes the one-to- one correspondence between points in the plane and the ordered
pairs of the real numbers.
E. The graph of the linear equations in two variables is a line.

II- OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. Define the Cartesian Coordinate Plane;
2. Determine the location of the given pair of points;
3. Plot the point corresponding to a given pair of coordinates; and
4. Relate the problems in the real-life scenarios.

III- VALUES INTEGRATION
Inculcate the importance of the past to present.

IV- MATERIALS
- Graphing Board
- Board work for exercises
- Picture of Rene Descartes
- Flashcards
- PowerPoint Presentation
- Visual Aids

V- INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
- Practical Work
- Discussion
- Consolidation and Practice
VI- INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES
A. Daily Routine
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Arranging the chairs
4. Picking up of pieces of papers
5. Checking of Attendance ( if necessary)
6. Review (Activating Prior Knowledge)
Have a brief review on the previous lesson which is all about the Positive Integral Exponents.
7. Motivation
a. Ask the class to expound the maxim, “Curiosity is the mother of all inventions.”
b. Tell them to enumerate some inventions made out of curiosity. If possible, let them
identify the inventor/s.
c. Mention the name of Rene Descartes. Show his picture. Ask them about his great
invention which now bears his name.
d. Ask them about the different ways of appreciating the contributions made by the great
men, such as Descartes, to humanity.
8. Presentation of Objectives:
a. Objectives will be flashed on screen/ posted on the board.
b. Everyone in the class will read each of the objectives.
9. Impose and remind the students of the class rules while the conduct of the discussion/
activities is going on.

B. Lesson Proper
1. Activity
HUMAN RECTANGULAR COORDINATE SYSTEM
Description: This Activity is a game which will enable you to learn the Rectangular Coordinate system.
Directions : Form two lines. 9 of you will form a horizontal line (x-axis) and 8 for the vertical line (y-
axis). These lines should intersect at the middle. Others may stay at any quadrant separated by the lines.
You may sit down and will only stand when the coordinates of the point, the axis or the quadrant you
belong to is called.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:

1. What is the Rectangular Coordinate System composed of?

2. Where do you see the origin?
3. What are the signs of coordinates of the points in each quadrant?

2. Analysis
- Discuss thoroughly the Cartesian coordinate system. Through the question- and-answer approach,
let the students identify the important parts of the Cartesian coordinate plane, such as the x-axis,
y-axis, the origin, and quadrant.
- Ask them the following questions:

GUIDE QUESTIONS:

1. Why is it that the coordinate of a point is referred to as “ordered pair’’?.

2. If the x and y-coordinate are both equal to 0, where can you find the point?
3. Describe the coordinates of all points along the y-axis.
4. Describe the coordinates of all points along the x-axis.
3. Abstraction
Perfect location
Description: This activity will enable you to locate the coordinates in one Cartesian Coordinate
Plane.
Directions : Plot each point in the Cartesian plane. Name each point by writing the letter beside it.
The coordinates are provided in the box below.
y

A (2,0) G ( -1, 4)

B (4,2) H ( -3, 5)

C ( 4,4) I ( -4,4)

D ( 3,5) J ( -4, 2)

E ( 1,4) K ( -2,0)

F ( 0,1) L ( 0, -2)

Connect points A to L.
What figure is formed? y

GUIDE QUESTIONS

1. Is (-4,4) the same as (4,-4)? Justify your answer.

2. In (3, 5), what is the abscissa and the ordinate?
3. How can rectangular Coordinate system be used in real-life?

4. Application
PARTS OF THE BUILDING
Description: This activity will enable you to give the coordinates of the parts of the building.
Directions : Describe the location of each point below by completing the following table. An
example is done for you. Note that the point indicates the center of the given part of the building.

Parts of the Building Coordinates Quadrants

Example: Morning Room (-11, 8) II
1. Gilt Room
2. Terrace Hall
3. Old Kitchen
4. Billiard Room
5. Salon
6. Reception Hall
7. Grand Staircase
8. Marble Hall
9. Reception Office
10. Drawing Room
11. Entrance
12. Library
13. Spa
14. Harborough Room
IV- Evaluation

You are challenged!

Plot the following points and tell which three or more points lie in one line.

(5,-1), (-1,4) (4,0),(-6,0)

(3,-5),(-3,-1) ( 6,4),(-5,-6) (0,-3),(-3,6)

V- Assignment

Reflection

In this lesson, I have understood that _________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________
The words coordinate, abscissa, and ordinate,
____________________________________________ . as now used in
mathematics were introduced by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716)
of Germany. Leibniz was the great genius of the seventeenth century. He
was also Newton’s rival in the intervention of the calculus.
