LISTENING SECTION

In this section of the test you will have the chance to show how well you understand spoken
English. There are four parts to this section with special directions for each part.

PART I. Pictures. Questions 1 to 3.


Directions. There are three items in this part. For each item, you will see a picture on your
test paper and you will hear four short statements. The statements will be spoken TWICE.
They will not be printed on your test paper, so you must listen carefully to understand what
the speakers say. When you hear the four statements, look at the picture on your test paper
and choose the statement that best describes what you see in the picture. Then, on your
answer sheet, find the number of the question and mark your answer.
Look at the sample below. Now listen to the four statements:

A. The students are sitting in groups.


B. The teacher is holding up her hand.
C. The children are speaking to each other.
D. The children are participating in the lesson.

Statement (D), “The children are participating in the lesson,” best describes what you see in
the picture. Therefore, you should choose answer (D).

Now let’s begin with the picture marked number 1 on your test paper.

Number 1. Look at picture number 1 on your test paper. (physical appearance)


A. The man is roping a cow
B. The man is sitting on the saddle
C. The man is removing a scarf
D. The man is holding a rope

Number 2. Look at picture number 2 on your test paper. (condition/situation)


A. The meeting is not going well
B. The business is very successful
C. The people are very tired
D. They are talking to each other

Number 3. Look at picture number 3 on your test paper. (location)


A. The mechanic is beside the automobile
B. The mechanic is working on the car in the street
C. The mechanic is looking at the engine
D. The mechanic is checking the computer data

PART II. Questions – Responses. Questions 4 to 7.


Directions. There are three items in this part of the test. For each item, you will hear a
question or statement spoken in English followed by three responses, also spoken in
English. They will be spoken TWICE. They will not be printed on your test paper, so you
must listen carefully to understand what the speakers say. You are to choose the best
response to each question or statement and mark it on your answer sheet.
Now listen to a sample question. You will hear:

[Man’s voice] : When should I call back?


[Woman’s voice] : You will also hear:

(A) Anytime after lunch is fine.


(B) That is not my responsibility.
(C) You can call with the information.

The best response to the question, “When should I call back?” is choice (A), “Anytime after
lunch is fine.” Therefore you should choose answer (A).

Now let’s begin with question number 4 on your test paper.

5. (suggestion)

PART III. Short Conversation. Questions 8 to 11.


Directions. There are four items in this part of the test. For each item you will hear a short
conversation between two people. You will hear the conversations TWICE. They will not be
printed on your test paper, so you must listen carefully to understand what the speakers say.
On your test paper, you will read a question about each conversation. The question will be
followed by four answers. You are to choose the best answer to each question and mark it
on your answer sheet.

Now, let’s begin with question number 8 on your test paper.


Number 8. (suggestion: rinci)
Woman : All our diamonds are the highest quality, sir. Our manager handpicks them
himself. Your wife is sure to love them!
Man : They all look pretty, but I'm not sure which kind of ring she'll like. There are
so many to choose from!
Woman : If you tell me your budget, I can suggest a smaller range of options, and I'm
sure you'll find something to your liking. Also, we offer a full money-back
guarantee, so if your wife doesn't like it or wants to exchange, it's no
problem.

Man : Our projects always seem to run late.

Man : Let’s remain them about this. Don’t let them be lazy.

PART IV. Short Talks. Questions 12 to 15.


Directions. In this part of the test you will hear two short talks. Each will be spoken TWICE.
They will not be printed on your test paper, so you must listen carefully to understand and
remember what is said. On your test paper, you will read two or more questions about each
short talk. Each question will be followed by four answers. You have to choose the best
answer to each question and mark it on your answer sheet.

The Top Brain Company wishes to announce a change in business hours. Starting
Monday, stocks and bonds will be bought and sold from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Currency
exchanges may be transacted from one to four, and all other transactions will be
attended from 10 a.m. to noon. We are always closed on weekends, and during the
months of December and January, our offices will also be closed on Wednesdays.

week while the main lobby inside the west entrance door on Main Street is being repainted.
The east hospital entrance is located on Border Street, and it is open each day during
regular visiting hours, which are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 7 a.m. to 7
p.m. on Sundays. If you need to enter the hospital during non-visiting hours, please use the
north entrance, located on First Street. The west entrance door will re-open one week from
today. Thank you for your patience during this phase of our lobby improvement project.
