University education as the Church had intended in founding it, is about ethical
CHARACTER and intellectual LEARNING, not a place of revelry and rebellion as the
world wants it to be. At Bologna (Italy) in 1088 AD, the Church founded the first
University as “autonomous union” (from Latin= “universitas”) of professors and
students not only for monastic and ecclesiastical studies but for open liberal and
all-round encyclopedic studies (Latin= “studia generalis”) for character and learning
to award Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees. True character, wisdom and
knowledge belong to God and He alone gives these to all especially His Children
who believe and depend on Him (Jas 1:15-17). Effective learning for excellence in
academic lectures and examinations require focused study (2Tim 2:15).

Today, many wrongly think that Christ’s Grace is unmerited favourable permission
(Rom 6:1-2) to remain weak and sinful. Not so, God forbid. Christ’s Grace is
unmerited favourable power divinely given to strengthen (2Cor 12:9; Php 4:13;
2Tim 2:1) believers to overcome sin (Rom 6:14; Tit 2:11-12) and to labour and strive
victoriously without weariness or despair (Isa 40:31; 1Cor 15:10; 2Cor 4:1-4; Col
1:29).

God’s people on earth are like sheep who must succeed among wolves through
wisdom (Mat 10:16; Eph 5:15-17), and are royal priests (Exo 19:5-6; 1Pet 2:9) who
must subdue the world through the light of good character and godly wisdom (Rom
8:35-39). Christians who draw wisdom and power from God through His Word and
Spirit turn out to be more intelligent than their intellectual Professors and wiser
than their experienced Elders, even cleverer than crafty enemies and smarter than
subtle demons.
Psa 119:97-104
97 ‫( מ‬Mem)
O how I love your law!
All day long I meditate on it.
98 Your commandments make me WISER than my enemies,
for I am always aware of them.
99 I have MORE INSIGHT than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your rules.
100 I am MORE DISCERNING than those older than I,
for I observe your precepts.
101 I stay away from the evil path,
so that I might keep your instructions.
102 I do not turn aside from your regulations,
for you teach me.
103 Your words are sweeter
in my mouth than honey!
104 Your precepts give me DISCERNMENT.
Therefore I hate all deceitful actions.

Solomon was a busy King yet he could make out time enough to be maximized for
intellectual research, inaugural lectures and prolific publication!
1Ki 4:29-34
29 God gave Solomon WISDOM and very great DISCERNMENT; the
breadth of his UNDERSTANDING was as infinite as the sand on the
seashore.
30 Solomon was wiser than all the men of the east and all the sages of
Egypt.
31 He was wiser than any man, including Ethan the Ezrahite or Heman,
Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol. He was famous in all the neighboring
nations.
32 He composed 3,000 proverbs and 1,005 songs.
33 He produced manuals on botany, describing every kind of plant,
from the cedars of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows on walls. He also
produced manuals on biology, describing animals, birds, insects, and
fish.
34 People from all nations came to hear Solomon's display of wisdom;
they came from all the kings of the earth who heard about his wisdom.

Intellectual intelligence may be from natural capacity but it is mostly a product of

skillful methods of accumulation and comprehension, retrieval and application of
knowledge. Success of godly students and excellence in academic assessment tests
and examinations could be greatly enhanced by some advantageous approach to
study and advantageous usage of time:
Eph 5:15-17 Live Wisely
15 Therefore be very careful how you live — not as unwise but as wise,
16 taking advantage of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
17 For this reason do not be foolish, but be wise by understanding what the
Lord's will is.

1. Primarily Spiritual Power Advantage: be in Christ, live for Christ, and pray to
God for help in all you do.

2. Life-Application Mindset Advantage: Doing a course which you are not clear
and prone about its life-application makes study a meaningless and
drudgery. Always ask what business, employment or purpose in life could I
benefit/serve with this knowledge? What aspects of life are these subjects
useful? What problems in life do these subjects solve? With such application
mindset you understand better because you no longer read only to pass
exams and forget but also read to retain for future purpose in life.

3. Proactive Reading Advantage: read up and ahead from your course

outline/syllabus or standard textbook in preparation for class lectures.

4. Discussion Group Advantage: hold discussion groups or solve problems with

others for further understanding and expertise.

5. Time Utilization Advantage: avoid burnig away your time, energy and
emotions through idle chattering, ‘gisting’, pinging, browsing,
perambulating, sleeping, frivolous relationships, vain fantasizations,
chemical/carnal addictions. Use in-between lectures to immediately correct
and update your notes.

6. Speed Reading Advantage: enhancing one’s reading speed skill requires that
we go beyond the habit of reading by following the speed of a pointer or
following the mouth speed to advance into training our eyes and brain in
photographic multiple-word capturing or even multiple-line capturing
approaches. The skill of photographic reading can be developed by practice
and proven techniques.
Advantageous reading of any written material for any purpose requires
having sufficient time for study which one must consistently make out, and
using proficient skills which one must persistently develop. This would give
one advantage in reading speed and reading scope to enhance
comprehension, accumulation, exploration, application and expression of
knowledge which are key goals of academic learning and assessment.

7. Targeted Speed Advantage: Every reading session should be done on

examination speed and a quick summary of what you have read. This keeps
sleep and absent-mindedness away. Set what to read and time within which
to finish it and keep checking your speed with time as we do during exams

8. Variety Subject Advantage: to checkmate possible boredom always go for

preps with another standby course in addition to the course you intend to
read. Sometimes one may feel bored about one’s intended reading which
slows down your productivity during presps, switching to another subject
may enhance speed.

9. Daily Coverage Advantage: be ready to pass exam daily for all the classwork
based on all courses or subjects and classes you have attended that same
day. If you cannot be ready to excel or pass daily when the lectures are still
fresh, exam reading would not be revision but crash backlog reading which
would not put you better knowledge position.

10.Google Search Advantage: For best and fast exploitation of internet search
time requires you understand how search engines work. There are three
main ways they search based on Boolean operators.
Boolean Operators are simple words (AND, OR, NOT or AND NOT) used as
conjunctions to combine or exclude keywords in a search, resulting in more
focused and productive results. (Alliant Libraries)
(a) Any Word search – when your search key words are entered without
punctuation
(b) Only Word combination search – when your search key words are entered
with plus symbol added to their spellings at the beginning.
(c) Phrase search – when your search key phrases are enclosed within quote
symbols
e.g. << Jesus reigns forever >> as separate words give 3,000,000m hits,
and << +jesus +reigns +forever >> with prefixed plus give 41 hits,
or << +jesus reigns forever >> with plus prefixing only the word Jesus give
400 hits,
but << “Jesus reigns forever” >> inside a quote gives 28,000 hits.
(d) These days, Google has enhanced their search Engine for more advanced
and specified search options which are automatically suggested and
throw down menu as search words are being typed in. These search
options are based on advanced combination of Boolean Operators with
other logical operators like Proximity Operators (NEAR and AT-LEAST).

11.Cumulative Advantage: If you maintain your reading uptodate daily you shall
be ahead of others who in the hope of normal firebrigade crash reading
postpone and procrastinate in their readups till last minute.

12.Mnemonic Advantage: Summarise or Key up or peg your daily reading in

forms of summaries, diagrams or figures or mnemonics for easy revision and
recall. They become handy for last minute revisions and answering exam
questions.

13.Rehearsal Advantage: Rehearse past exam questions and exercise problems

for further habitual experience in solving problems.
