Aber Epheu nenn' ich jene Mädchen

But ivy call I those girls

mit den sanften Worten,

   
with the soft words,
(with the gentle voices,)

mit dem Haar, dem schlichten, hellen

     
with the hair, the simple, lightly
(whose hair is arranged simply, brightly)

um den leis' gewölbten Brau'n,

    
around the softly arched brows,
(around softly arched eyebrows, )

mit den braunen seelenvollen Rehenaugen,

    
with the brown soulful doe's-eyes,

die in Tränen steh'n so oft,

     
which in tears stand so often,

in ihren Tränen gerade sind unwiderstehlich;

     
in their tears especially they-are irresistible;

ohne Kraft und Selbstgefühl,

without power and self-consciousness,

schmucklos mit verborg'ner Blüte,

unadorned with hidden blossoms,
