CHAPTER 1
PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the study

The evolution of the internet has led to its usage as the best medium of
communication where by two-third (2/3) of the internet world’s population visit social
networking sites (SNSs) thus serving as communication and connection tools. Social media
exploded as category of online discourse which enables people to create contents, share them,
bookmark the and networking at a prodigious rate.

Todays communication is a easy as walking into a neighbor’s residence to deliver

a piece of information or vice versa through the use of social media. Social media is a fast
changing the public discourse in the society.

 To examine the impact of nature of usage on students’ academic performance.

 To examine the impact of health addiction on students’ academic performance.
 To examine the impact of time duration on students’ academic performance.

The rationale of this study is to find out if there is a significant relationship in the
usage of social media to the academic performance of a student. It is undeniably true that most of
the millennial nowadays were into having SNS’s account especially the most popular Social
Networking Site Facebook. In fact, social media wouldn’t be a problem at all if it should only be
used properly since it refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create,
share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.

In this research, it is important to realize what should be focused on student’s career.

 It is important to know if Social Media will be a help or a hindrance among students. I

2
 It is essential to know the reasons why most of the students prefer to use social media
instead of studying during their available time.
 It is also very important to know the reason why most of the students prefer to used
social media like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, mobile legends and etc. Instead of
studying during their available time.

Social media is about collaboration, networking, sharing, and great knowledge and
content, all of those features are of great value in the context of higher education but still, social
media was considered to be a deteriorating agent in academics by some people. The study aims
to know the positive or negative effects of social media usage towards student academic
performance the researchers conducted that there is no direct relationship between using social
media and school performance of the students, since even through the students just use social
media for entertainment the still have high and good grades instead of looking for some
information related to their lessons. The researchers suggest that student must have control over
their usage of social media to avoid negative effects of social media towards academic
performance.

The birth of the internet of its success in changing our society has been largely
researched in various subject and defined in various terms. Social media is the most recent form
of media and having many features and characteristics it has many facilities on some place like
communicating, texting, image sharing audio and video sharing etc. its usage in increasing day
by day all over the world.

3.1billion people are social media users worldwide. Social media addiction is
becoming a global problem that keeps growing. As of 2018, one-third of the global population
use social media. 210 million people are estimated to suffer from internet and social media
addictions. Internet and social media addictions continue to grow as our dependence on
technology increase. Estimates posit that over 210 million people suffer from internet and social
media addictions worldwide

Teens who spend 5 hours a day on their phones 2x more likely to show depressive
symptoms. The relationship between excessive mobile use and depression appears to be strongly
linked to gender. With 58% more females than males experiencing depressive symptoms. 71% of
people sleep with or next to their mobile phone. A study found that 71% Americans sleep with or
next to a mobile device some 47 million people in America do not get enough sleep and 55%
more teens were sleep deprived in 2015 than. 50% of people driving while using smartphone are
checking social media 90% of drivers admit to using smartphones behind the wheel of those
respondents 50% reportedly use their smartphones to check social media.

2
Theoretical and conceptual framework of the study
This theoretical and conceptual framework shows the advantage and disadvantage to
students using social media or networking site. Social media are virtual worlds for the internet
users, most especially to students. Spending so much time in the virtual worlds effects the
academic learning activities of young minds and the behavior of these youths.

The past few years, social media has grown to be a behavior in our culture, social
media are website and applications that enable users to create and share content or participate in
social networking. Social media plays an important to every students life, it is easier for them to
communicate, access information and provides information via social media platforms;
Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Google, and etc. But, nowadays, social, media
platforms are used for negatively such as bullying, stereotyping, pornography and even a go-to
place for depressed people. The used of social media really affects one’s life whether be it their
social aspects, privacy, health, and performance in school.

Psychological theory of needs theorized pointed out that humans need to feel a sense
of belonging and acceptance, whether it comes from a large social group, such as clubs, office
culture, religious groups, professional organizations, sports teams, gangs, small social
connections or even social networking sites. They need to be love and be loved by others. In the
absence of these elements, many people become susceptible to loneliness, social anxiety, and
clinical depression.

2
This study conceptualized that socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents
and social networking site usage are related to the academic performance and behavioral
alterations of the students. The theories cited in this research such reached a common point in
supporting the variables indicated.

As mentioned, respondents' academic performance and behavioral alterations are

determined by their sociodemographic characteristics. Age which is affected by individual's
maturity, gender, and civil status and family income has something to do with their participation
in modern social media.

Social networking site usage is conceived to be related with respondents'

participation in social networking. Socialization through cyber media could spell great
significance in this study. All aforementioned variables significantly affect the academic
performance and low study habits of the students. The Conceptual Framework of the study is
best presented in figure 1.

Review of Related Literature

Social media just like Facebook has became popular now even if it all started as hobby
but for several computer literates individual has changed to become a social norm and existence-
style for students around the world. Facebook users often experience poor academic
performance. Then Karpinski (2009) stated that social media has a negative association with
students’ academic performance which is much greater than the advantages derived through the
use of social media platforms. People around the globe have been addicted to the internet which
has given rise to more students using social media more often than before. Also in the judgment
of Karpinski (2009) that social media platforms users usually devote lesser time to their studies
has to compared to nonusers did and subsequently has lower GPAs (General Point Average).

Social platforms are mainly used by students for socializing activities rather than
academic purpose and that majority of students feel that social platforms have positive impact on
academic growth. It was seen that internet has spread its wings to reach teenager’s school life. It
was also observed by Young that students are more dependent on internet to access info that
pertain their academic life as well as entertainment.

To those who are addicted users love to use the internet to set back their personal and
professional responsibilities in which the final outcome is poor academic performance of the
students. This research effort is targeted at finding effects of social media on students
performance. Therefore, the literature review discusses the relevant research that is useful to the

2
objectives of this research that is useful to the objectives of the research project. Several
research studies investigating the topic under review are found to be very recent. Since
most of the innovative features offered by social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter,
others are not that old and the phenomenon of the use of these media hast boosted
recently with the introduction of revolutionary features and platforms, a volume of recent
research on its effect on student academic performance is available. Most of the studies
chosen have been published in the past four five years.

This research finds Facebook to be the most popular social networking site
among student as reported by some researchers and it has reached a one billion users
based in October 2012 . SNS which started in 2003 and got popular among educational
setups. Like then with more than 35.000.000 users has been reported as the third most
popular SNS but mostly used for professional networking. In addition this research found
blogs, social impact, and twitter among the other popular social networking sites.

His review argues that researches who support the integration of social media
into educational setup are of the view that conversational processes ensuring maximum
interaction and maximum mix of reflection are possible only

THE PROBLEM

Statement of the problem

The internet is today the most important source of information and the growing
dimensions of the use of social media by students cannot be underestimated. It has been observed
that students devote more attention and time to social media than they do for their studies and
they cannot pass their examinations well if they do not learn. Also, the study conducted by Maya
(2015), revealed that media use contribute to lower academic performance, low self-perceptions
and less interest in college oriented carriers.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of social networking media to the
academic performance of students. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
(1) What are the different types of social networking media subscribed by the students?
(2) What are the different types of gadgets commonly used by the respondents in accessing
social networking media?

2
(3) What are the perceived effects of social media to the academic performance of the students?
(4) What is the relationship of the social media and the respondents’ academic performance?

Significance of the study

Social networks are becoming more popular among university students and are a new
way of spending free time and serve as a separate channel for finding the necessary information,
both educational and entertaining. Therefore, it is urgent to examine the question of what effect
social networks have on their users, in particular, how the use of social networks affects the
academic success of students. This study will discover this information, giving the researchers an
opportunity to explore and gain new knowledge. Furthermore, it can be used for future studies

Will help the teachers of the school to know the influence that social media has on their
students, so as to assist them to enlighten and create awareness to the students on the possible
influence it has on them. The study is of significant to parents in the sense that they will know
the possible effects these social media usage has on their children, so as to serve as watch-dog to
their children on the usage of the social networking site. The study will enable the students of
the senior level so that they will be aware that, apart from the social benefits of this social
networking site, using the sites more than necessary will pose possible dangers to their health. It
will be relevant in assisting students in understanding the diversity of social media. It will
provide relevance material for students and other researchers undertaking similar research. The
study will help researchers with more information on the Influence of social media on student’s
academic performance.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research design
With technology being greater than ever before, kids and teens are spending larger
amounts of time in front of screens. Teenagers in today’s world are being taught a whole new
style of learning and communication through the help of social networks. For example,
technology was introduced into the classrooms to enhance learning, but is it really benefiting
learners? With technology not only at home but also in classrooms, kids are spending an
abundant amount of time on devices and social media. By screens that refers to and includes a
laptop, phone, or any other device.
For many, technology is a distraction and a temptation to not focus on the teacher,
lesson, or anything. They become off-task easily and lack focus.
People lack social skills like interaction and communication with others because of
technology.
People often believe everything they read or watch online Everything they need to
know is at accessible 24/7 and includes more knowledge than need Devices can be a distraction
to you and others around you.
Although it does have its high points, there are many downsides to having technology.
We decided to research the effects of social media to students academic performance
because We curious to know more about the effects of social media and how it affects people on
a daily basis. We would like to know if it has more negative or positive effects for people. There
so many things we would like to learn and we hope that through this Multi-genre Project, we can
expand and go in depth on the effects of social media to students academic performance.

Flow of the Study

Unhealthy Sleep Patterns. On top of increased rates of anxiety and depression,
spending too much time on social media can lead to poor sleep. Numerous studies have shown
that increased use of social media has a negative effect on your sleep quality. Some of the
Advantages of social media include: Increased connectivity- The connected state of social media
allows you to connect with many people around the world who may share common interests.
This allows people to increase their diverseness. Social networking can exacerbate feelings of
disconnect, and put children at higher risk for depression, and low self-esteem. Social media has
a damaging effect on the lives of students' since it can negatively affect relationships with others,
cause them to be inattentive, and can get cyber bullied.

Research Instrument
During our research we provided a paper with questions to the students. Through it
we will know what and when they use social media apps. Researchers have found that using
social media obsessively causes more than just anxiety. In fact, testing has found that using too
much internet can cause depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), impulsive

disorder, problems with mental functioning, paranoia, and loneliness. Having your social
connections reaffirmed makes you feel good. Brain chemistry. Social networks are physically
addictive as well as psychologically. A study from Harvard University showed that self-
disclosure online fires up a part of the brain that also lights up when taking an addictive
substance, like cocaine.
