SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION

SYSTEM IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE

ABSTRACT
Sustainability development is extremely important in several sectors such as
construction, industrial, transportation etc. The purpose of the study is to assess
and evaluate the sustainability index of the educational institute. The case study is
conducted in the Engineering College of Mumbai University. The sustainability
index was evaluated for the college by using different sustainability indicators and
sub indicators. The study revealed that the sustainability index of the campus was
in the poor zone however after it can be increased to the excellent level of
sustainability. The study was also made for the calculation of the carbon foot print
in the college and it was found that 141427.0864 kg of carbon is emitted per year
in the campus. It was also found that the carbon foot print in the campus can be
reduced by using various alternatives. The sustainable practices were also
suggested for increasing the sustainability score of the campus. The results
showed that the sustainability index of the campus cane be increased to the
excellent level by various sustainable activities and the carbon emission can be
reduced.

1. INTRODUCTION

Sustainability index is one of the effective tools to measure the environmental,

economic and social condition of the country, institute, industry, building etc.
Sustainable development means development that meets current needs without
compromising the needs of future generations by focusing on a balance of
environmental, social and economic.(Abd-Razak).Sustainability development is
necessary in all the sectors because of the over exploitation of the resources which
is due to increasing population which is also affecting the earth carrying capacity.

Sustainable Campus
Eco-campus concept mainly focuses on the efficient uses of energy and water;
minimize waste generation or pollution and also economic efficiency. Eco-campus
focuses on the reduction of the University’s contribution to emissions of
greenhouse gases, procure a cost effective and secure supply of energy, encourages
and enhance staff and student energy issues, also promotes personal action, reduce
the University’s energy and water consumption, reduce wastes to landfill and
integrate environmental considerations into all contracts and services considered to
have significant environmental impacts (gopinath).

Research Field
The study was conducted in Lokmanya Tilak College of Engineering(LTCE)
which is situated in kopar kahirane,Navi Mumbai. The college is spread in 2.8 Acres and
the built-up space is 22000 Sq. M. The population of the lokmanya Tilak College of engineering
is 2682 members.

Fig 1 layout of LTCE

The fig (1) shows the satellite image of the lokmanya Tilak College of engineering. It is clear
from the image that the accessibility of the campus is best because it is located near to the
residential area. The campus is also compact and has the minimum land utilization. The total
area of the lokmanya Tilak College is 2.8 Acres and the buildup space is 22000 Sq. M. The
campus of lokmanya Tilak College of engineering has the compact development and is also
accessible so it has many advantages
1. As the campus is near to the bus stand and the railway station it reduces the fuel
consumption and also encourages the use of public transport.
2. Reduce the vehicle reliance.
3. Increasing accessibility to facilities and services areas
4. More efficient provision of infrastructure and utilities.
All the above factors lead to the good physical development of the lokmanya Tilak College of
engineering. As many colleges have their campus outside the city the lokmanya Tilak College of
engineering is at the center of the city. The location of the college plays an important role in the
sustainability of the college in terms of environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Fig(2) Research methodology

The Fig (2) shows the steps involved in the research methodology used in the
project. The present study was done to check the present sustainable condition of
the research field and the data was collected for this purpose. This data was the
analysis and the main indicators of sustainability were defined and accordingly the
sustainability index was calculated. After getting the sustainability index if it was
found to be poor then the solution was generated to increase sustainability index
and again the sustainability index was calculated.

THE INDICATORS OF SUSTAINABILITY USED FOR ASSESSMENT OF

SUSTAINABILITY INDEX

Indicators for sustainability criteria are tools used to check and evaluate the
fulfillment of sustainability criteria, as well as progress towards sustainability.
Indicators can provide quantitative measurement and qualitative assessment of
human activities and their impact on the surrounding world (indicators).the
purpose of sustainability indicators is to show how well the system is working in
terms of sustainability. Table no (1) shows the indicators and their sub indicators
on basis of which the sustainability score is calculated of LTCE. The study shows
that the indicators and the sub indicators selected have maximum impact on the
sustainability score of LTCE.
INDICATOR OF SUSTAINABILITY SUB INDICATORS
I. Power factor
1. Electricity II. Energy audit
III. Source of electricity
I. Rainwater harvesting
II. Methods used to reduce the water consumption
2. Water
or low flow rate device used
III. Wastewater treatment
I. Reduce
3. Paper II. Reuse
III. Recycle
I. Segregation
4. Food waste II. Composting
III. Landfill
Table No (1)

This indicators was studied and the consumption of the electricity, water and paper
waste and food waste was calculated with the help of energy audit, water audit,
paper waste and food waste audit and the following results was obtain

1. Total annual consumption of Electricity is 438093 kWh and the total annual bill for the
electricity in lokmanya Tilak college of engineering is Rs 5627166 /-.The maximum
consumption of electricity is due to the computers CRT i.e. 23 % and LCD 11 % , Air
conditioning i.e. 15%.
2. The monthly consumption of water in LTCE is 1820 M3 out of which the maximum
consumption of water is for wash room and toilets i.e. 65% ,drinking and cleaning 11%
3. The total weight of the paper used per year in LTCE is 39852 kg out of which the
maximum paper is used by the student i.e. 87%
4. The yearly waste of food in canteen is 3300 kg.

THE EVALUATION SYSTEM FOR SUSTAINABILITY INDEX CAMPUS

The evaluation system for the sustainability index of campus is derived by the combination of
the Dow Jones method of the sustainability index and the method used for the calculating the
sustainability index by the Teri University(dow jones)(Suresh Jain teri university).
