x
[[ 2 +1]] , if − 2 < x ≤ 0

classify the type of discontinuity as removable, jump essential or infinite essential.
II. Unit 2 - Derivatives and Differentiation

III. Unit 3 - Applications of Differentiation
A. L’Hopital’s Rule. Evaluate the following limits.

√x
1. lim 0.5(e2x + e−x )
x→0+

2. lim
x→∞

B. Rectilinear Motion. A particle moves along a horizontal line. Its position on the
line in t seconds is given by s(t) = t(15t-t2-63). Here, a zero position represents the
origin, a negative position is to the left of the origin, and a positive position is to the
right of the origin. If v(t) and a(t) refer to the velocity and the acceleration of the
particle respectively at t seconds, then the signs are given in the table below.

t  (0,3)  3  (3,5)  5  (5,7)  7  (7, + ∞ )

v(t)  -  0  +  +  +  0  -

a(t)  +  +  +  0  -  -  -

1. Determine the time intervals when...
a) the particle is moving to the left.
b) the velocity of the particle is increasing.
c) the particle is speeding up.
2. From the 2nd to 8th second, when is the particle located at its rightmost
position?
3. Where is the particle located when it attains its absolute maximum velocity?
4. Find the total distance travelled by the particle after 10 seconds.

3
√x
C. Linear Approximation. Let f(x) = 2−(x/2)
.
1. Find an expression for the local linear approximation of f at xo = 8.
2. Use your answer in the previous item to approximate f(8.05).

D. Absolute Extrema. Find the x-coordinates of the absolute extremum points, if any,
of f(x) = 2cos2x - sinx on the interval [ π /6, 2π/3 ].

E. Optimization: Surface Area. A closed rectangular box with a volume of 1152 in3
has to be made such that the length of the base is four times the width. What should
be the dimensions of the box to minimize the amount of material that will be used to
cover the surface of the box?

F. Optimization: Equation with the Least Area. Find an equation of the line
through the point (3,5) that cuts off the least area from the first quadrant.

G. Optimization: Cutting Wire. A piece of wire 10 m long is cut into two pieces. One
piece is bent into a square and the other is bent into an equilateral triangle. How
should the wire be cut so that the total area enclosed is minimum? (Hint: Area of
2
Equilateral Triangle = √34s ).

H. Related Rates: Conical Tank. At the rate of 2 ft3/min, water is flowing into an
inverted conical tank with radius 15 ft and height 12 ft. At what rate is the water level
rising when the depth of the water is at 4 ft?

I. Related Rates: Approaching the Intersection. An automobile traveling south at
12 kph and a motorcycle traveling west at 5 kph are approaching an intersection.
How fast is the distance between the vehicles changing when the automobile is 60
km north from the intersection while the motorcycle is 25 km east of the same
intersection?

J. Related Rates: Shadow Problem. A man 7 feet tall is walking toward a building at
the rate of 4 feet per second. If there is a light on the ground 40 feet from the
building, how fast is the man’s shadow on the building growing shorter when he is
25 feet from the building?

K. Differentials: Percent Error. The period of the pendulum of a grandfather clock is
T=2π√(L/g) , where L is the length (in meters) of the pendulum, T is the period (in
seconds), and g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8m/s2). Suppose an increase in
temperature increases the length L of the pendulum by 2%. What is the
corresponding percentage error in the period?

L. Differentials: Chocolate Coating: Approximate the volume of chocolate required
to coat a spherical ball of nuts and almonds of radius 12 cm to obtain a chocolate
coating of 0.25cm.

M. Marginals.
The cost of producing x units of a certain product is given by
2
C(x) = 2000 + 2x5 + 800 x
(in pesos)
and the price demand function is given by
7x
p(x) = 150 - 400 (in pesos)
Approximate the profit earned in selling the 101st unit, using the marginal profit
function.
