New wave of terror in Nigeria

Nigerian militants have threatened to renew their terror campaign just two weeks after car bombings
which marred the West African country’s Independence Day celebrations on 1 October.

Arrests were made in Nigeria and South Africa subsequent to those attacks which the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger
Delta (Mend) say targeted individuals who had nothing to do with militant operations.

Nigerian police arrested – and later released - the campaign manager of presidential aspirant and former head of state Ibrahim
Babangida while in South Africa the authorities arrested Nigerian arms dealer Henry Okah who has always denied having a
leadership role with the Nigerian militant organisation.

“Since both governments are bent on blaming innocent persons with ridiculous insinuations and unrelated evidence we have
decided to carry out another attack in Abuja without altering our mode of operation to prove these suspects innocent,” wrote Mend
spokesman Jomo Gbomo in a communiqué emailed to journalists.

“As usual we will give a 30 minute advance warning to avoid civilian casualties (and) then sit back and watch how the blame game
will be played out on all those already falsely accused.”

Gbomo suggested the Nigerian government was trying to undermine those opposed to the presidential ambition of incumbent head
of state Goodluck Jonathan and that the Nigerian government was “hiding under the cloak of terrorist-hunters (but) have been witch-
hunting, falsely accusing and harassing its perceived opponents.”
