Digital Communications Engineering 601 Semester 1, 2014 Final Exam

Question 1 (25 Marks)

Consider a (7,4) cyclic code with g ( x)  1  x  x3

(a) Given a data word d  (1010) . Find the corresponding code word. (6 Marks)
(b) Given a code word c  (10101) . Find the corresponding data word.(6 Marks)
(c) Given the above cyclic code find a generator matrix G . (5 Marks)
(d) Find a corresponding parity check matrix H . (8 Marks)

Question 2 (25 Marks)

An ideal impulse train of unity amplitude is used to sample an analogue signal s (t ) given
by s (t )  2sin(2100 t ) sin(2700 t ).

(a) If s (t ) is sampled at a rate 30% above the Nyquist sampling rate, calculate the
resulting sampling frequency. (6 Marks)
(b) An 8-bit linear quantiser with an input operating range of 2 Volts is used to
quantise the sampled signal. Calculate the signal-to-quantising distortion power ratio
(SDR) of the quantised signal. (13 Marks)
(c) The quantised signal is then encoded into a binary PCM signal. For transmission
over a baseband channel, the PCM signal is further encoded into a 3-level line code
by transforming a 4-bit binary word into a 3-symbol ternary word. Determine the
signalling symbol rate of the resulting ternary signal. (6 Marks)

Question 3 (25 Marks)

A random signal x(t ) is applied to a communication channel such that the output signal
y (t ), is given by y (t )  x (t )  0.25x (t  2ms ).

(a) Derive the amplitude response of the communication channel. Express the result in a
compact form. (13 Marks)
(b) Given that x(t ) has a uniform power spectral density of 50 mW/Hz up to 2 kHz,
calculate the power of y (t ). (12 Marks)

Question 4 (25 Marks)

The waveform of a transmitted signal is s (t )   bn g (t  nT ) , where bn   1 or  1 is
n 
the n-th signalling bit, and T is the signalling period. Assuming P (bn  1)  P (bn  1) ,
bn are independent of each other, and the pulse shape g (t ) satisfies the first Nyquist
criterion with respect to intersymbol interference with g (0)  1 . Due to channel

impairments, the received waveform becomes r (t )   bn g '(t  nT ) where
n 
g '(t )  g (t )  0.1g (t  T ).

(a) Derive all the possible values for the received signal r (t ) at the decision instants
t  kT . (10 Marks)
(b) Determine the worst-case eye opening, and specify the data patterns associated with
this worst-case eye opening. (4 Marks)
(c) The received signal r (t ) is corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) of
zero mean and standard deviation  . The probability of noise exceeding A Volts is
1  A 
given by p (n  A)  erfc  . Derive an expression for the average error
2  2 
probability. (11 Marks)
