This is the 1st test of courage, a striving quest to know our shadow and be whole person ANIMA Feminine side of men Represents irrational moods and feelings 2nd test of courage ANIMUS Masculine side of women Symbolizes thinking and reasoning GREAT MOTHER Represents fertility & nourishment; power & distraction Both positive and negative feelings The fertility & nourishment dimension is symbolized by: a tree, garden plowed field, sea, heaven, home, country, church, etc. Power & destruction: godmother, Mother of God, Mother Nature, Mother Earth, stepmother, witch. Fertility and power combine to form the concept of rebirth. WISE OLD MAN Archetype of wisdom and meaning People who are misled by this archetype may be impressive and captivating speakers whose words, however, makes little sense. Is symbolized by life itself. HERO Represented as a powerful person, sometimes part god, who fights against odds to conquer or vanquish evil. However, the hero is often undone by seemingly insignificant person or event. (i.e. Achilles’ heel) Heroes must have flaws and imperfections The achievement of consciousness was 1 of the earliest achievements SELF An inherited tendency to move toward growth, perfection, and completion. “The archetypes of archetypes” – most comprehensive This pulls other archetypes together and unite them in the process of self-realization. Includes both personal and collective unconscious images. Its ultimate symbol is mandala. (persona,shadow,animus,anima) The mandala represents the perfect self, order, unity and totality.
