CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of Study

RATIONALE

In this research study entitled “A Causal Comparative Study

to the number of hours spent in a part time job to the General

Weighted Average of selected college students in the vicinity of

Manila”, the researchers’ goal is to find out the cause and

effect relationship of having a part time job to the General

Weighted average of the selected college students in the

vicinity of Manila, since poverty is still an issue wherein some

students tend to apply for a part time job along with their

studies. The researchers would also like to enlighten the minds

of other people who are still confused in the concept of being a

working student and how difficult it is to be one.

SETTING OF THE PROBLEM

The problem stated in the study revolves around the

selected college students who are involved in a part-time job

along the vicinity of Manila.

LITERATURE FOUNDATION OF THE STUDY

Many students, especially from the lower income groups who

can afford only the bare minimum and struggling in supporting

the expenses for education, accept part-time job to satisfy the

students’ basic needs. Majority of the students involved in a

part-time job tend to lag behind their academic performance than

the full-time students or non-working students.

According to Kellams and Kyre (1978), as cited in Mariano,

et.al. (1992), found out that part-time working students do less

academic work, less classroom activities, have fewer time for

school work. Preparation and examination, inattentive in class,

and cannot concentrate well in their studies.

SERIOUSNESS OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM

The researchers aim to know the possible effects of having

a part-time job to the General Weighted Average of the selected

college students in the vicinity of Manila in order to answer

the questions brought by the general and specific problems of

the study.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THE PROBLEM

In this research study, the research problem is focused on

the cause and effect relationship of the number of hours spent

in a part-time job to the General Weighted Average of the

selected college students in the vicinity of Manila.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE PROBLEM

In this research study, the main purpose of the research

problem is to show the cause and effect relationship of the

number of hours spent in a part-time job to the General Weighted

Average of the students in the vicinity of Manila.

Research Framework

Figure 1. Shows the cause and effect relationship of having

a part-time job to the General Weighted Average of the selected

college students.

Selected college
A part- time job students in Manila

In this research study, the number of hours spent in

a part-time job served as the independent variable while the

General Weighted Average served as the dependent variable.

3. Statement of the Problem

This research study aim to determine the

cause and effect relationship of number of hours spent in a

part-time job to the General Weighted Average of the selected

college students in the vicinity of Manila. This study seeks to

answer the following questions.

1.) How many number of hours spend in working?

2.) What is the General Weighted Average (GWA) last school year?

3.) What is the significant difference between the number of

hours spent by selected in a part-time job by selected college

students in the vicinity of Manila and the General Weighted

Average of the said college students?

4. Hypothesis

Ho: The General Weighted Average of the selected college

students in Manila can be affected by the number of hours spent

in a part-time job.

H₁ : The General Weighted Average of the selected college

students in Manila cannot be affected by the number of hours

spent in a part-time job.

5. Significance of the Study

The importance of this research study about

the cause and effect relationship of number of hours spent in a

part-time job to the General Weighted Average of the selected

college students in Manila is to determine how the participation

of the college students in a part-time job affect the academic

performance of the above mentioned working students.

6. Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The research study is focused only on the

cause and effect of the number of hours spent in a part-time job

to the General Weighted Average of the selected college students

in Manila.

The research study is limited only on the

cause and effect relationship of the said variables without

focusing on the other aspects such as gender, financial

capacity, and size of the family of the participants that may

affect the entire study.

Definition of Terms

General Weighted Average. Refers to the computed

grades of every students for corresponding quarters/semesters

for the whole school year.

Part-time job. Serves as a help for financially

unstable students who are aspiring to learn by being the source

of income that can be used for some personal purposes.

CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the discussion on the research methodology

of the study, method of research to be used, the population

frame and sample size, instrumentation, and data gathering

procedure.

Research Design

The researchers used Causal-Comparative Research Design in this

study, to know the cause and effect relationship of the two

given variables, the Independent Variable, number of hours spent

in in a part-time job; and the Dependent Variable, General

Weighted Average of the selected college students in the

vicinity of Manila, wherein, the Independent Variable is the

cause to the effect, which is the Dependent Variable.

Sampling Techniques and Participants

In this study, the researchers will use purposive type of

sampling, where participants are selected according to purpose.

The researchers will gather at least 25 working students in the

Universities along the vicinity of Manila, therefore, the

sampling to be used is purposive, and non-randomized.

Questionnaires will be given to identify the effect of the

number of hours spent in a part-time job to the General Weighted

Average of selected college students in the vicinity of Manila.

Research Instrument

The researchers will use a survey questionnaire made by the

researchers, containing questions about the respondents’ number

of hours spent in the part-time job for a day, and the general

weighted average of the respondents for the previous school

year.
