GEC09 - Ethics

Look for a newspaper article that tackles an ethical issue.

An article from truthout.org “Trump Reportedly Moving to Deport Kids With Cancer and Deadly
Illnesses” https://truthout.org/articles/trump-reportedly-moving-to-deport-kids-with-cancer-and-
deadly-illnesses/. The Trump administration has reportedly ended a program which allowed
immigrants with serious illnesses to temporarily remain in the U.S., a move by the White House
that rights advocates decried as “a death sentence” for children receiving treatment for cancer,
HIV, and other life-threatening diseases. Immigrants living and receiving medical care in
Massachusetts learned of the Trump administration’s policy change when they received letters
from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services earlier this month warning them they will be
deported if they don’t leave the country in 33 days.

1.) What makes this a matter of ethics?

People who are receiving medical attention are being deported because they are not
a citizen of United States. This is a matter of ethical issue because it conflicts with society
and one’s moral principles. In this situation it is provocative enough because it is already
in a disagreement with Trump’s administration program and society’s opinion of what is
right and wrong regarding human rights to healthcare.
2.) What is your own ethical judgement in this case?

Even if trump wants to impose and reinforce his administration on immigration

laws, it is not right to neglect someone in need of medical care and whose lives are on the
line just because they do not fit the requirements of the law. I do not see this as right because
even if they are not an official citizen of the country, they still have human rights and must
be cared for and treated as a human being no matter what kind of rules they have. It is
unethical to treat someone as something less than a human being for something they have
no control of.

3.) What are the reasons for judgement?

The reason is even if someone does not obey the rules of the law, in this case is the
illegal immigration; should still be treated as a part of their responsibility and care. Trump’s
administration could have took care and paid attention to those who are sick and in need
of healthcare and letting them treat their illness first before proceeding in any form legal
action and/or deportation.
