CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The rise of the Information Age starting from 1980s—

2000s bought a wide range of innovation in the technology,

resulting to a widespread usage of the internet. Internet

paved its way to become a necessity in human’s life. With

the internet being ubiquitous, humans engaged their life

within it through the excessive usage of social media. In

the developments of technology, users were expected to

adopt a higher education with the usage of social media

(Selwyn, 2012). According to Synthesio (2019) by 2021 the

social media users were expected to grow by 3.1 billion,

which is almost half of the world’s population. The

engagement of people in social media provides them with a

various way to enhance information.

Social media is frequently seen as main factor of

communication method in current times regarding the

interchange of knowledge, data and the unknown information.

In the beginning social media was known as a way to catch

up with friends and to connect with people. Moreover,

within the speed growth of social media, it became a viable

platform for exchanging and sharing information, and

knowledge throughout communities and networks. The

increased use of social networking websites has become a

social norm and way of life for people from all over the

world (Boyd. 2007).

The advancement in technology social networking sites

have become more and more suitable among students and a

major concern have arose wherein the use of social media

sites among undergraduate students affects their academic

performances. Wiley and Sisson (2006) further argue that

past studies found out that there is more than ninety

percent (90%) of tertiary school students use social

networking sites. Research has justified that social media

has a benefit among students. Also, students use social

networking sites almost thirty (30) minutes throughout the

day in their daily routine life (Nicole, Charles, and

Cliff,2007). This shows the level of whom students are

patronizing social media and this may bring both positive

and negative effects of social media on the academic

performance of the students.

As we all know there is no such thing as one-sided, so

it is for social media as it comes with both positive and

negative effects. There is a correlation between social

media usage and academic performance of students in

universities. According to ( Wheeler,2008) (Rifkin,

Longnecker, Leach et al. ,2009) there have been various

views and opinions which recognize four major advantages of

social media use in education. These include; enhancing

relationship, improving learning motivation, offering

personalized course material, and developing collaborative

abilities. Also, Liccardi et al (2007), argued that

students are socially connected with one another and

therefore share their daily learning experiences and do

conversation on various topics through social media

whereas.

Social network websites grab students’ attention and

then diverts it towards non educational and inappropriate

actions including useless chatting by (Kuppuswamy and

Shankar 2010). Many universities and schools around the

world restrict the access to the social networking sites

within the students. They justify this by helping students

concentrate on their studies just like the old times.

Social Media builds a connection between its user and

establish a sense of cooperation (McCarroll and Curan,

2013). Given that, social media could be a medium for

education. According to Neier and Zayer (2015) social media

should be count as one of the educational tool to engage

its learners in open discussion and expression of their

ideas in or out of their learning class. Furthermore, When

learners are engaged in a community in the learning

process, they can analyze and identify useful and

applicable knowledge, and comprehend the environment and

circumstances which increases the value of education (Liu,

2010). Moreover, according to Siemens (2005) cooperation

and connectiveness via networks could establish a higher

learning skills, because learning has its nature which is,

learning is not individualistic activity. It was defined as

“connectivism” which has eight principles;

 Learning and knowledge rests in diversity of opinions.

 Learning is a process of connecting specialised nodes

or information sources.

 Learning may reside in non-human appliances.

 Capacity to know more is more critical than what is

currently known.

 Nurturing and maintaining connections is needed to

facilitate continual learning.

 Ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and

concepts is a core skill.

 Currency (accurate, up-to-date knowledge) is the

intent of all connectivist learning activities.

 Decision-making itself is a learning process

However social media has its pros and cons, user may

engage to anything harmful with the usage of social media

usage. The horror of engaging a student to social media as

this may cause addiction to the social media without

acquiring an educational content must be set aside and

eradicate. Usage of social media should be guided and

include academic activities in order to build a community

wherein higher education where achieved and to increase

student’s ability and engagement in higher education

(Toliver, 2011). Additionally, according to Gülbahar (2014)

a “technologically-rich instructional activities” should be

put in order to assure and provide the students integrated

and appropriate technologies into their future classrooms

for pre-service teachers.

B. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The researchers aimed to determine the Effects of

Social Media to the Academic Performance of Selected STEM

Students in St. Matthew College SY. 2019-2020.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following

questions:

1. What types of social media platforms are commonly used

by STEM students in St. Matthew College?

2. What are the purposes of STEM students in using social

media?

3. By the use of social media, how does it affect the

academic performance of STEM students in St. Matthew

College?

C. HYPOTHESES

Null Hypothesis: There is no significant relationship

between the Effects of Social Media to the Academic

Performance of a student.

Alternative Hypothesis: There is a significant

relationship between the Effects of Social Media to the

Academic Performance of a student.

D.SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

In the study, the researchers desire to know the

Effects of Social Media to the Academic Performance of

Selected Grade 12- STEM Students of St. Matthew College in

S.Y. 2019-2020. It focuses on the aspects on how students

perform in school through the help of social media, which

will be evaluated throughout the whole study. The

researchers limited the study in seventy-five (75) STEM

students randomly, which are suitable in the study in order

to gain concrete information that will contribute to this

research. The objective of the research study is to

investigate whether there is a positive impact of the use

of social media to students’ academic performances. This

study was conducted in St. Matthew College (SMC), formerly

known as St. Matthew Academy, a private educational

institution in San Mateo, Rizal.

F. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will focus on how social media affects the

academic performance of the selected Grade 12 Stem

students. Social media is a platform wherein people can

communicate and share ideas. The study specifically

benefits the following:

To students. The study will benefit the students because

social media provides knowledge and information to the

students.

To teachers. The study will benefit the teachers because

teachers can able to improve the involvement of their

students in studies and education, improve technological

ability, provide a great sense of collaboration in the

classroom and make good communication skills.

To future researchers. The outcome of the study will be

useful to future researchers, for it will provide essential

information, guide and will also serve as a reference for

further studies relative to this subject. The study is also

open for any development.
