1. Know the Classifications of Communication;


2. Be able to Identify and Explain each Classifications;
3. Determine how and when or even what type of communication is used.

Classifications:

1. COMMUNICATION MODE
a. Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication
b. Visual Communication
2. CONTEXT
3. PURPOSE & STYLE

 CONTEXT is the circumstance or environment in which communications takes place (Physical


or actual setting; Value positions of a speaker/listener; Relevance or appropriateness of
message conveyed).

Types of Communication according to CONTEXT

1. INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
Latin: INTRA means within or inside
It means talking to oneself.
Self- or inner-talk; inner monologue; self-verbalization or self-statement
REASONS:
Boost confidence when nervous to speak in front of an audience.
Apprise yourself that you performed.
A good job.
Console yourself that you did a talk poorly.
Words to console yourself:

2. INTERPESONAL COMMUNICATION
Latin: INTER means between, among or together
It means an interactive exchange.
It is also a group communication.
REASONS:
It is meant to establish or deepen one’s relationship with others. (less seriousness and formality)
Interpersonal talks are meant for maintaining social relationships, transactional talks aim to
accomplish or resolve something at the end of the conversation. (more formal and profound)

Interpersonal Communications:

Speaker A: Hello! I’m AC Ramos. And you are? Speaker B: Oh, I’m Miko
Mendoza. Glad to meet you.
How are you related to the

Transactional Communications:

Characteristics of Interpersonal Communication:


 Independent Individuals – means is that each person has their own motivation,
expectations. And interpretations of communication.
 Inherently Rational – meant to be understood.
 Inescapable – means that you are always communicating, always presenting
information about yourself and interpreting information from other people.
 Involves Personal Choice – means you can choose how to communicate information
because you are a rational individual.

3. EXTENDED COMMUNICATION
It involves the use of electronic media. Messages are transmitted quickly.
REASONS:
It is public in nature.
Language used may be more formal.
Your own thing, behavior, and attitude may be influenced by other people and you may be
persuaded to take views you hear.

4. ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION
It focuses on the role that communication plays in organizational context.
For an organization to be successful, a system of communication should be put in place.
A set of rules or standards for communication protocol should be made clear so that interaction
patterns are established.

5. INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
The communication between or among people having different linguistic, religious, ethnic,
social, and professional backgrounds.

Even gender difference affects communications.


Individuals having different orientations communicate and interpret messages differently. This
usually happens with non-verbal communication.

Strategies for Effective Communication across Cultures:


 Know yourself – understand why you are pursuing the subject
 Learn about different cultures and values
 Used shared language
 Take your time
 Consider physical and human setting
 Improve communication skills
 Encourage feedback, allow for correction and adjustment of message
 Develop empathy

 PURPOSE & STYLE focuses on the Communication Setting and Mode of Delivery.

Types of Communication according to PURPOSE & STYLE

I. FORMAL COMMUNICATION is to inform, to educate, to persuade.


Employs formal language delivered orally or in written form.
Formal situation and writings such as lectures, public talks/speeches, researches & project
proposals, reports & business letters.
II. INFORMAL COMMUNICATION doesn’t employ formal language, oral (face-to-face), phone calls,
written texts (emails, letters).
Personal & ordinary situations such as-conversations with friends, family members or
acquaintances about anything.
This is also to socialize and enhance relationship.
