SMART-RAIL : A PROPOSED METRO-CEBU RAIL TRANSIT STATION AND

COMMERCIAL COMPLEX

Integrating ‘Smart Grids’, a modernized electrical grid in an Urban Rail System and

commercial development to utilize renewable energy using smart building designs

ABSTRACT:

In 2015, United Nation announced the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with

17 Goals and 169 targets to address issues of importance to humanity and the planet.

One of which is the Sustainable Development Goal 7: To ensure access to affordable,

reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. Of all the sustainable development

challenges the world is facing today, Energy is one of which deeply affects our daily

lives and livelihoods.

The increase in population, As cities and nations become more technologically

advanced, electricity consumption rises to levels that may no longer be manageable if

left unattended. According to UN 2018 SDG Report, energy efficiency continues to

improve, which is offsetting carbon dioxide emissions, reducing energy demand and

making energy more affordable, although renewable energy in the electricity sector has

advanced rapidly, accelerated progress is also needed in the areas of transport, heating

and cooling. Despite some steps forward, 41% of the world’s population still lack access

to clean cooking fuels and technologies. Overall, progress on Goal 7 remains too slow

to be on track to meet the global energy targets for 2030.

“Smart Grid” of the “Smart Energy System” is a modernized electrical grid, it is more

efficient transmission of electricity, quicker restoration of electricity after power

disturbances, reduced operations and management costs for utilities, and ultimately

lower power costs for consumers, reduced peak demand, which will also help lower

electricity rates, increased integration of large-scale renewable energy systems, better

integration of customer-owner power generation systems, including renewable energy

systems and improved security. This new system will respond and manage the

increasing complexity and needs of electricity in the 21st Century.
