FACTORS AFFECTING THE ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCE OF GRADE 12 STUDENTS IN

ITS AFFECT ON THE STUDY HABITS IN TVTS

FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST TO OCTOBER

2018
CHAPTER 1

BACKROUND OF THE STUDY

INTRODUCTION

Study habits is how one studies. That is, the habits which students form during their

school years. Without good study habits, a student cannot succeed.

The researchers would like to study the effect of study habits to the said performance of

the senior high school students because the researcher saw that the causes of poor performance

of senior high school students of TVTS Main were low of motivation, poor study habits, and lack

of parental involvement of education. It is said that having this, can give a positive impact on the

part of the students. They can surely have a successful performance and a high rating in the

academic world if they always tend and practice study habits.

How a student takes his or her studies greatly determines his or her studies, greatly

determine his/her level of academic achievements. The level of preparation and learning

strategies develop and employed consciously by the students, go a long way to influence their

level of academic performance.

A good study habits will definitely yield positive academic performance and achievements

and also inefficient in poor study habits leads to academic failure. Students attitude and study

habit towards any subject has been described as a function of passion coupled with their belief on

that particular which has a long way to go on their belief on the academic performance.
Different study habit and might have a positive effect on academic performance and

achievements depends upon the students ability to schedule his/her time, the plan of his/her

study, the habits of concentration, note, taking, mental review, over learning and so on. In other

words, positive academic performance is a function of proper study habits and skills.

Since study habits are an important factor in learning, it become necessary to investigate

into its nature.

This study can serve as a basis in order for the students’ parents, and also teachers to

set rules for this study habit is a part of their daily routine, because in the very first place, the

success of the students in their academic performance is also a success of the institution where

they are.

Good study habits according to Katelyn (2013) are sometimes referred to us positive or

productive study habits. As the name implies, they are those pleasant study habits which have the

tendency to improve the academic performance of the students or that seen to produce good

result. They are the study habits which makes the students successful on their studies. After

developing and applying they true out their academic career.

Mark and Howard (2011) are of the opinion that the most common challenge to the

success of students of all ramifications is a lack of effective or positive (good) study habit. They

further maintain that if students can develop a good study habit and with good discipline, they

are bound to perform remark ability well in their academic pursuit

Thus, this study investigates the impact of study habits on secondary school students in their

academic performance at the TVTS Main Naruangan.

Learning habits or style will helps students to understand why they sometimes get frosted

with common study methods. He observes that good study habits are essential to educational

success; as they contribute to a successful academic failure. Good study habits lead to good

grades while good grades lead to an admission to better college and universities that will lead to

a great career. Developing good study habits to Marc is very crucial for every student

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDYS

The general objectives of the research are to assess the study habits of students and

1.1. Name (optional)

1.2. Gender

1.3. Strand

1.4. Grade Point Average (GPA)

2. What are the factors affecting the study habits of Grade 12 students?

3. Is there a significant difference between the study habits and the academic performance

of Grade 12 students?

4. What measures can be proposed to address the finding of the study?

CONSEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

One of the things that really need a great attention is the road to success of the students, and

one of the playing factors in order for that success is attained is how they practice their study

habits. This is the main reason why the researchers would like to assess the factors affecting

the academic performance of Grade 12 students of TVTS for the month of August to October

2018. Usually, the finding of this study serves as a challenge on the part of the students,

parents, teachers and administrators so that proper advisory, attention and action will be

given to the learners.

Review of Related Literature

This chapter aims to provide strong foundation to this study which contains gathered

Research works of different literature and references by the researchers. It covers the review of

relevant literature which is explained accordingly.

Meaning of study habits

Study skills are usually defined as students’ ability to manage time and other resources to

complete an academic task successfully

Ozsoy, Memis and Tamur (2009) stated that ‘study habit’ is the amount and kinds of study

routines which the students used during a regular period of study occurred in conducive

environment. In the literature, study skills are usually defined as student ability to manage time

and other resources to complete an academic task successful. The students approach to learning

is highly individualistic with a wide variation of technique observable.

The learner Dictionary has defined study as a “mental effort” to obtain knowledge.

According to Good’s dictionary of education, “a study habit is the tendency of student to

study when the opportunities are given, the students’ way of studying whether systematic or

unsystematic, efficient or inefficient.

Crede and Kuncel (2008) define study as study routines, including but not restricted to,

frequency of studying sessions, review of materials, self-testing, rehersal of learned matural, and

studying a conductive environment

Relationship between study habits and academic performance

Ergeme (2011) reported that the study habits and Grade Point Average of students are

positively correlated. Poor study habits predict low GPA of students. Similarly, Ayesha and

Khurshid’s(2013) and Congos (2010) research revealed that all subscale of studies skills

inventory are positively correlated with the achievement level. More recently Sandhu (2014)

studied the study habits of adolescence and their relation with achievement level and found the

significant positive correlation between these two variables.

Positive and Negative study habits

Katelyn (2013) therefore, identifies fourteen positive or good study habits which students

can employ in order to improve their academic performance. They are: attending all classes,

reviewing your notes daily, reading material prior to it being covered in class, study daily, have

at least one conference with the professor, develop and learn a word list for the course, read

materials to improve you r background in the course(other than text), attend health session,

attend learning resource lab when available, develop a list of possible questions, as questions in

class, study an old exam (when available), avoid a last minute cram session and sleep at least 8

hours the night before exams commence.

In the same vein, Harper and Row (2009), highlights good study habits as thus:

1. Studying everyday

2. Creating a quiet place at home or anywhere to study

3. Turning off the phone, TV and other device that may disturb you when studying.

4. Listening to soft music or white noise

5. Studying in a way that suits your learning style.

6. Taking regular breaks

7. Studying early (do not wait last minutes)

8. Studying the hardest thing first, spending more time on topics you find difficult

9. Asking for help if one is struggling with his studies, taking notes as one studies as well

as organizing notes in a notebook or folder.

On the other hand, bad study habits according to John (2010) are negative or non-negative study

habits which are undesirable and counter-productive to student’s academic performance. When

developed and utilized by students at all levels, they tend to hamper academic progress and

performance of the users. Due to the peculiarity and uniqueness of individual students, what may

be considered as bad study habits to students? ”A” may be seemed to be very productive and

efficient for students “B”.

However, bad study habits generally range from procrastinations, truancy, not taking note,

selective reading, studying while watching television or what is generally regarded as destructive

study etc. Nikki (2013) identifies bad reading habits to includes studying with friends, listening

to loud music, studying in uncomfortable conditions, cramming, etc.

Factors affecting the study habits of the students

There are several factors that tend to affects students study habits. Anything can affect

students study habits. Their ability to study and concentrate can be increase by finding a quiet

place where they can concentrate. Destructions such as phones, chat rooms, TM and text,

messaging, TV, video games, music and computers can all decrease students ability to learn.

Whatever is going on around and within a student on mind is going to affect his study habits.

According to SheeRa (2012), study habits can be affected by factors such as:

1. Age of the students

2. Home environments

3. Studying material

4. Television and computer games

5. Social network (facebook)

6. Students determination and aspiration

7. Financial and economic status of parents

8. The rule of the school

9. The teaching style of teachers

10. Some activities in school

11. The nature friends and peer group

12. Assignment and homework restriction

13. Students parents educational background

14. Parents not interested and supportive in helping their children study

15. Household chores

16. Family problems
