Abstract

My research topic in this report is Diversity Management in KFC Australia. My aim is to find
out what the current diversity management system is in KFC Australia, what the impacts of
diversity management are on KFC’s company culture and why it is important to have diversity
management system in KFC, how to improve the diversity management system in KFC
Australia. Five employees and manager from KFC will be involved for reference collection
and my main research methods used are both qualitative and quantitative. Since KFC is one of
the leading fast food retailers in the world, it is important for such a big company to have
diversity culture in the company and manage it properly. Details of how KFC manage diversity
and how diversity impacts the company will be explained and described in the following report.

I would like to express deep sense of thanks to my mentor Mr. Khim Raj Gautam of Central
Australian College Hobart Campus who gave me great support by providing guidelines and
consultations for my research report.

In addition, I got many useful information and relative data from articles and reports online as
well as from the library of University of Tasmania in Mowbray Campus. Furthermore, I would

like to thank employees who are working in KFC Mowbray branch and Launceston branch for
giving me some practical information through my interviews for my quantitative research data
collection.

Finally, I would also like to thank many people, especially my classmates who have made
valuable comment suggestions on my report, which gave me an inspiration to improve the
quality of the assignment.

Background

KFC is a global well-known fast food retailer which was first started in 1930 in Corbin,
Kentucky, USA and landed in Australia in 1968 with the first restaurant opened in Guildford,
Sydney NSW. Currently, KFC has more than 20,000 KFC outlets in over 125 countries all over
the world and grows to more than 640 restaurants across Australia.

However, fast food industry is highly competitive in Australia, major competitors of KFC
Australia include McDonald’s, Subway, Hungry Jack’s, etc. According to the new research
from Roy Morgan released for year 2018, over 17 million Australians who aged 14+ buy or
eat take away food either from leading fast food outlets or local fish and chips shops or
convenience store or the like. According to the report, over 52% of these consumers eating at
or having McDonald’s take away in an average six months which is almost 12% more than
the second most popular quick service restaurant KFC on 40.8%.

Introduction

The purpose of this report is to review and research current practices in diversity and make
suggestions for how the diversity policy for KFC Australia can be improved. The aim of this
report is to explain and identify the importance of managing diversity in the workplace and the
benefits of diversity in the workplace.

Diversity refers to the mix of people in an organization. The concept of diversity encompasses
acceptance and respect. It means understanding that everyone is unique and recognizing our
individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of both social identities such as race,
ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious
beliefs, political beliefs and professional identity such as profession, education, work

experiences, organizational level, functional area, division/ department, and location. It is the
exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about
understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating
the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual.

Research Question Hypothesis

1. What is the current diversity management system in KFC Australia?

2. What are the impacts of diversity on KFC’s company culture and why it is important to
have diversity management system in KFC?

3. How to improve the diversity management system in KFC Australia?

Literature Review – definition, characteristics, types, advantages, importance,


conclusion

A literature review is a summary and analysis of published sources which are used for a
particular topic. It is an assessment of the articles, books, websites, magazines or journals used
as references in the report and provides a summary, classification, comparison and evaluation
of them.

A good and effective literature review should define and delimit the research topic, state
procedures for obtaining relevant literature articles, describe common independent or
dependent variables, identify criteria for evaluating outcomes, examine covariation of research
outcomes with research characteristics as well as support conclusions of the report with data
presented in the review.

There are many different types of literature review such as narrative literature review which
summarizes the body of a literature and draws conclusions about the topic and identifies gaps
in a body of knowledge; systematic literature review is a more rigorous and well-defined type
of literature review compared to other types. It is comprehensive and details the timeframe and
could be divided into two categories such as meta-analysis and meta-synthesis; If the research
does not have sufficient primary data collection and data analysis, then integrative literature
review could be used as it critiques and synthesizes secondary data about the research topic in

an integrated way; Or if your research focuses on a pool of theory which are accumulated in
regard to an issue, concept or theory, then theoretical literature review could be used as it
establishes those existing theories and relationships between them and develop new hypotheses
to be tested.

There are many benefits when conducting a good literature review, for example, a good
literature review could assess the current state of research on a topic, determine the range and
area to work with for this research report; an effective literature review will also identify the
experts on a particular topic by revealing those researches who have written the most on a
particular topic; it also identifies key questions about a topic which may need further research
and determine methodologies which were used in past studies of the same topic.

In conclusion, a complete and effective literature review shows a solid foundation of


knowledge of a researcher in the area and provide a direction of further study for new
researchers.

Chapter Reviews

Due to the business globalization, companies are now preferring to work as a team than
individual work which changes workforce demographics to have more diversity management
than ever. There are many strategies which need to be used for managing workforce diversity
which include communication, performance, leadership and responsibilities management, etc.

Managing diversity in workforce is a big challenge as well as a big opportunity for managers.
An effective diversity management could promote the perception, acknowledgement and
implementation of diversity in an organization and improve the communication among
employees which may improve the productivity of the organization.

Diversity management is also a process to create and maintain a positive work environment by
valuing the similarities and differences of individuals and emphasize on organization culture.
However, it is not easy to manage diversity in a company, there are many barriers should be
overcome which leads to more committed, better satisfied and better performing employees.

Diversity management is also an important part of human resource management studies which
plays an effective role in many companies, adequate mentoring and guidance could lead to a
high productivity of a company.

Diversity management is underpinned by Commonwealth and State anti-discrimination law
which include aging, gender, disability discrimination, harassment and bullying in workplace.
