Just over 15 months ago the Flowerdale Community House was

approached by Regional Arts Victoria (RAV) to see whether any local
artists were interested in trying for selection for a project called
Illuminated by Fire.

Not long after this, local artist, Sharon Collins had an idea to cast the
hand of every Flowerdale resident in clear glass resin. One
suggestion plus one idea equals one fantastic project – and
Enlightened Spirits was born.

Because the Flowerdale Tree logo had become a symbol of everything wonderful about
our community, and had been immortalized on the skin of more than 80 people, the Tree
became an integral part of the Enlightened Spirits project.

After submitting a proposal, along with 35 other applicants Sharon Collins’ proposal was accepted as one of the eleven
projects to be included in the Illuminated by Fire display. Apart from the criteria of ―astonishing art‖, the project was
also enhanced by the amount of community involvement in it. More than 280 Flowerdale residents, their families and
their friends have had their hands cast for this Artistic Installation.

Last Saturday, at the Flowerdale Recreation Reserve, Enlightened Spirits was launched with around 200 people
attending. After a delicious dinner, fantastic performances from Rita and her friends in

FLOWERDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Where Every Day Is Open Day

Every Day Is Open Day at Flowerdale Primary School. 2010 has flown by so quickly, and as we look back on
the range of experiences offered to our children over the year, our little school’s motto certainly is appropriate.

During Term 4 our kids have attended some excellent camps: the Grade 5/6 camp in Tasmania, the 2/3/4
camp in the City and the Prep/1 camp in Shepparton and Flowerdale.

Junior Fun Day, ELF Day, Athletics, Summer Sports Day, Healthy Food Day and a visit to Marysville have
ensured that our kids education is holistic. Literacy and numeracy have been our top focus with all children
working very hard to exceed their personal best.

We have had visits from Concordia College in SA, who were with us for a week of fun and work. Brent Harvey
came to Flowerdale and did a footy workshop with everyone having lots of fun.

Our friends from Boite have done music workshops with the children to produce a very catchy school song.
The Singing Group is in such demand that they are performing almost every week. They rocked at Hoof Over
Hills where they delighted an audience of 700 very wet and muddy people, and sang at the launch of the
Enlightened Spirits project and the Hall Gala Opening. At the moment they are gearing up for the annual
Christmas Concert which will be held in the new Multi-Purpose Room at School.

A visit to Darley Stud was a highlight of the term, with children overawed at the gorgeous horses, the beautiful
grounds and the friendly staff who ensured they had a day to remember. They have had great fun at the
Darley workshop where they were able to suggest names for race horses, and participate in a number of
related activities.

The Children’s Hub which incorporates the new Early Learning Centre, office space and a shared multi-purpose
room, is almost at completion. It looks fantastic with bright open spaces and great internal fittings. The
Kinder will be moving in next week.

The end of the year is time to say goodbye to some of our friends. We wish all our Grade 6 kids the very best
for their High School life in 2011. We sadly say goodbye to Christine Bauer who has been our Prep/1 teacher
for three years. Her contribution to our school has been exceptional and she is loved by the kids and parents
alike. Our Staff Quiz scores are set to plummet when Christine leaves, and we will all miss her very much.
Christine plans to go into the Restaurant business with her partner Satinda—mmmm can almost smell the
exotic aromas now.

Our Chaplain Sue, our Welfare Worker Darryl, and our smiling Wednesday Girl Kirran all finish up at the end of
the year. We thank them for everything they have done to improve the experiences of our children and our
staff.

And from everyone at Flowerdale Primary School, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and we wish you a New
Year filled with fun, family and great adventures.

Youth Group
There wereno excursions this month. We
have had two successful home sessions in
our backyard complete with cricket and BBQ.

Now the Hall renovations are completed we

have resumed at the Hall with games,
skipping and hula hooping.

Our last session for the year will be at

essential due to bus capacity.

We will be starting fundraising at the next

monthly sausage sizzle to help raise much
needed funds to continue our Junior & Senior
Youth Groups. So all those hungry
Flowerdalians come and support our Youth
Groups. Also for December Market we will be
offering Christmas wrapping service, $2 each
present so come along and have them all
wrapped for you, take the hassle of getting
them wrapped in time for Santa.

FLOWERDALE CFA
Flowerdale brigade is in the mood for decorations. After all, it is the season for Christmas trees and tinsel.

But decorations of a more enduring sort have been given to two members of our brigade recently. Judy Baker has
received lifetime membership of the Flowerdale CFA for 29 years of dedicated service to our brigade and our
community. Judy‘s energy, commitment and leadership are awe-inspiring. At the pre-fire season get-together, our
brigade presented Judy with a plaque to show a little of how much we appreciate her.

Norm Berndt has been awarded a medal for 10 years service to the CFA. The CFA organisation recognises how
valuable long-term members of the brigades are.

More decorations are on the way. The next one will be Santa, along with tinsel and lollies. He will arrive on the fire
tanker at Carols by Candlelight at the Hall on Sunday 19 December. Santa will be wearing a splendid new outfit made
by the Elves in Flowerdale to replace his old outfit, which suffered in the fires. Heartfelt thanks from the brigade go to
Joan Carroll for donating her skills in Santa-suit making.

Training. On Sunday 7 November, Flowerdale brigade burned off a windrow on a

private block on Silver Parrot Road. ―We were surprised to see so many firies
turn up to help burn it off‖, said the residents. The brigade made sure there were
Council permits before starting the burn. It was a great opportunity for our
members to practise hosing techniques at a controlled fire. Check out the photo
of the burn.

On Sunday 21 November, Flowerdale participated in a large group training event in Glenburn. ―Just about the best
training we‘ve been to in ages‖, reckon the Flowerdale firies.

PLAYGROUP NEWS
2010 has been a great year at Flowerdale playgroup. We
have taken part in many activities including spring
activities, puppet making, dance, mask making and
creating picture frames. The families have enjoyed taking
part in many special activities such as an Autumn Feast
and a Very hungry Caterpillar Day and of course
celebrating birthdays of our children. The highlight of our
year was the day at the Melbourne Aquarium. We also
visited the Seymour children‘s expo in October.

each other it was a nice and rewarding change.
In August we welcomed the return of Helen Killen for the
Rhythm and Beat – pre school music program and she
continues entertain the children. Helen runs a fantastic pre
school music program for our children and we look forward
to her visits.

In the first half of the year we enjoyed visits from Kate
from Murrindindi Library for storytime as part of the Your
Library Out There series, a service that has been visiting
playgroup since June 2009.
In April this year we were grateful to welcome Kathryn
Goldsmith from Murrindindi Toy Library and help her out
with promoting of the Toy Library van throughout
Flowerdale. Kathryn and her team supply a toy library
service to children aged 0 -6 through out the shire. We
thank all those involved in organising this service,
especially Kathryn. The Toy Library trailer will continue to
visit Flowerdale monthly in 2011.
In April along with parents from Marysville and Kinglake
playgroup we received a Merit Certificate at the Playgroup
Victoria AGM. To acknowledge the commitment we had
made towards community playgroups after the 2009
bushfires.
We currently have 12 families enrolled and we are
averaging about 5 families and 8 children each week. We
are always looking to improve our attendance and continue
to promote the program through out the community. The
challenge is sometimes not attracting new families but
making sure all those enrolled keep coming back, with
people having such busy lives.
Playgroup will continue to run in 2011 and is always looking
for new members to join our friendly group of mums and
their young children. Wishing all the parents and children
and their friends and family a happy and safe Christmas
and we look forward to catching up in 2011.
It has been a rewarding time organising playgroup for the
last two years. As Ruby and I begin another chapter in our
lives we wish the parents of Flowerdale playgroup well. I
hope 2011 brings many new people and some special old
ones along to playgroup and that the children continue to
enjoy playing together.

This term has been extremely exciting with children preparing for their end of year concert, which I‘m told ―it is a
surprise, I can‘t tell, but we are getting dressed up mum‖. We have been watching the new building nearing
completion. The children and staff have concluded the year with a trip to the Melbourne Zoo. It has been a great way
for the 4 year olds to celebrate their last term at the Flowerdale Kinder before moving onto school. Once again I‘d like
to thank Chrissie and Raelene for all their wonderful efforts with the children over the 2010 year.

As the year draws to a close the parents and children will farewell Raelene Eason. Raelene has taught at Flowerdale
Kinder for 10 years (2000- 2010) Raelene has put a lot of effort into the running of the Flowerdale Kinder over the
years, she has taught many children throughout the Flowerdale Valley and I‘m sure she will be valued in her new job
at Marie Williams Kindergarten in Kilmore. When one door closes another one opens and the Flowerdale kinder
community is looking forward to welcoming Melanie White as teacher for the 2011 year. Melanie has recently
complete the Bastow Institute‘ Contemporary Child development theory for Early Childhood educators and I‘m sure
she will be an asset to both the kinder and school community.

As president this year I‘ve enjoyed making a positive contribution to the kinder community. I‘d like to thank Kerrie
(Secretary) and Kim (Treasurer) for all there hard work on the committee this year. In what has been a year of many
changes they have worked hard to support the kinder and worked towards creating a good future for the Flowerdale
children. I would also like to wish the new Flowerdale Kinder Committee a great and successful year for 2011 as I will
no longer be President as this is my last year of a child attending the Kinder.

Yea Light’ns Up for Christmas

There is nothing like a hand-made Christmas decoration to raise the spirits and bring to mind the peace and good-will that we can all
feel at this time of year. Yea‘s Christmas decorations have been dwindling over recent years and the community agreed that some-
thing needed to be done. The Yea Business Tourism Association agreed to assist in the display, the Yea & District Memorial Hospital
agreed to fund and coordinate the project and the community resoundingly agreed to participate and the Light‘n Up Yea project was
founded.

Various community groups, schools and Rosebank Hostel and Nursing Home have been busily making beautiful lantern decorations
over the past month. These will adorn the shops for the month of Christmas. Of an evening they will be lit up with LED tea-lights and
will twinkle through the night. Most of the businesses in Yea have agreed to participate so the display will be truly a community effort.

The Yea & District Memorial Hospital sees this as an opportunity to promote health and wellbeing in the community. Bridget Clarke,
the new Community Health and Wellbeing Development Officer at the hospital, agrees this ticks all the boxes. ―It is a positive project
with a positive message; if we work together we can achieve great things. We can link the community to promote art, promote local
spending, increase physical activity, increase opportunities for reflection and connect diverse groups in a common cause.‖

Ms Clarke was also keen to point out the project was very much a group effort, ―I have been privileged to see this come together,‖
she said. ―Group leaders, participants and local businesses have all been so accommodating. Now we get to enjoy our efforts and

Light‘n Up Yea begins at 5pm Wednesday night the 1st of December and continues through to December 25th. Be sure to promenade
all the shops, the hospital and the library to see the decorations at their best and see if you can spot the work of someone you know.

Council supports Flowerdale locality

A community wish to have a single locality and postcode for the Flowerdale and Hazeldene locality has been supported by
Murrindindi Shire Council.

Council‘s support will now see Council officers make an approach to Australia Post to amend a single postcode for the area.

Mayor Peter Beales said there was overwhelming support for the single locality.

―It was the residents of Flowerdale and Hazeldene who approached Council to facilitate the process of the change. To support
their wishes Council staff undertook a survey of residents and the feedback has shown more than 85 per cent of respondents
have supported the Flowerdale locality,‖ Cr Beales said.

―Our decision to support the locality can be best summed up in the consultation feedback where residents said a single locality
and postcode would provide greater unity and a more cohesive community as well as eliminate the current confusion with
service providers and emergency service authorities.‖

the concept dependent on Australia Post agreeing to a single postcode.

―Importantly we have started the process that was initiated by the community to have a single locality and we will continue to
keep residents informed of Council‘s actions in this matter.

―We will be making strong representations to Australia Post to ensure that they are aware of the community‘s support and
feelings towards meeting the single town and postcode objective.‖

If Australia Post approves a single postcode, the Office of Geographic Names will be informed and a further opportunity will be
presented to residents to comment on the plan as part of the name changing process.

Cr Beales said further options would be explored if Australia Post did not support the concept.

―We have to go through a process that will ensure that we do not leave emergency services confused by any changes that
could impact on such services,‖ Cr Beales said.

War on weeds needs everyone’s support

Significant spring rain has created the perfect growing conditions for noxious weeds across Murrindindi Shire and
landowners and homeowners are asked to be vigilant when it comes to eradicating these exotic escapees.

Council‘s Climate Change and Natural Environment Portfolio spokesperson Cr Sally Abbott Smith said the on-set of
blooms of purple - Paterson‘s Curse, yellow - Cape Broom and English Broom and the discovery locally of one of
Australia‘s worst weed of national significance – Chilean needle grass – has prompted the call to action.

――For the last two seasons Council has been proactive in combating weeds across the shire. Murrindindi Shire Council
has been working with the Catchment Management Authority and Department of Primary Industry and Upper Goulburn
Landcare Network to get best value for money‖ to support this war on weeds,‖ Sue McNair Environment Project Officer
said.

―Murrindindi Shire Council is involved in a joint project with Benalla and Greater Shepparton Councils to map and treat
Chilean Needle Grass within threatened Grassy Woodlands of the Greater Murray Catchment.‖

―The Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority was successful in securing a grant through the Australian
Governments ‗Caring for our Country‘ program for this collaborative project.‖

Cr Abbott Smith said while Paterson‘s Curse was easily identifiable with its mass of purple flowers, Chilean needle grass
was not and it was important that people took the time to identify this weed and to take appropriate steps to eradicate it.

―Chilean needle grass, a perennial grass native to South America, can be confused with several native grasses and
now, when it‘s flowering, is the best time to identify it. It is extremely important to make the correct identification so that
our native grasses are not inadvertently destroyed,‖ Cr Abbott Smith said.

―Chilean needle grass is related to serrated tussock (Nassella trichotoma) – but it is considered one of our country‘s
worst weeds because of its invasiveness, its potential to spread very rapidly and its economic and environmental
impacts. Chilean needle grass affects both sown and native pastures.

―Chilean needle grass is very similar in appearance – flowers purplish, to the native spear grass (Austrostipa). However,
it can be identified by the raised collar or corona at the join of the seed body and the awn. It also has a distinctive tuft of
hairs at the junction of the leaf blade and the leaf sheath. Our native spear grasses lack these features.

Cr Abbott Smith said Council was willing to support landholders in their efforts to identify noxious weeds.

―I encourage you to call Council‘s Environment Project Officer Sue McNair at Murrindindi Shire Council on 5772 0702.

―Not only will Sue help with identification, she is also undertaking an important mapping project that is specifically
targeting Chilean needle grass. Mapping of infestation areas will allow key agencies such as Council and the
Department of Primary Industries to work towards containment and ultimately eradication of this emerging weed,‖ Cr
Abbott Smith said.

Co-ordinator Environmental Programs

In seeking to strengthen its environmental focus, the Council has created an exciting opportunity for
an enthusiastic, experienced and suitably qualified person to undertake the new role of Co-ordinator
Environmental Programs. The position will be responsible for developing and co-ordinating the
delivery of programs aimed at strengthening Council‘s environmental management practices and
encouraging community awareness and participation in environmental and sustainability initiatives.

A key role of the position is to lead the implementation and continual development of Council‘s
Environment Policy and Strategy and to provide specialist technical advice to other Council
departments.

Applications are invited from individuals who can demonstrate relevant tertiary qualifications and/or
substantial experience in environmental science (or related discipline), community and stakeholder
engagement, strategy and policy development and project and administrative management. Knowledge
of local government will be well regarded.

The position is full time, and classified Band 7 under the Victorian Local Authorities Award. The

27 November – 5 December 2010

With warmer weather just around the corner and more opportunities
for a cool swim in the local dam, river or at the beach it is important to stay safe
around water this summer.

Water Safety Week, a key part of the state-wide ‗Play it Safe by the Water‘ cam-
paign, will be held from Saturday 27 November – Sunday 5 December 2010.

The Royal Life Saving 2010 National Drowning Report was launched on 22 Septem-
ber and it held some alarming statistics. Between July 1st 2009 and June 30th 2010
there were 314 drowning deaths in Australian waterways. This figure is the highest
it‘s been at any time in the last seven years and is a reversal of the long-term down-
ward trend in drowning deaths.

The biggest increase in drowning (on the five year average) has occurred in lakes,
dams and lagoons and more than 50 per cent of drowning deaths have happened
outside major cities in regional areas.
Two high risk groups in the drowning statistics are children under the aged of five and people in the over 55s age group.

As younger children become more mobile they require greater supervision around water, both at home and when the family is out . Drowning
in people over 55 now represents a third of all drowning deaths and people in this group need increased knowledge of the impact of health
and medication on drowning, and the need to renew lifesaving skills.

The main things to remember about water safety:

Know the environment – There are different safety rules for beaches, rivers, lakes and swimming pools. Beware of local water condi-
tions and weather before going swimming.
Behave Safely – Obey all water safety signs, make sure someone is looking out for you and don‘t mix alcohol and swimming.
Learn to swim – Being able to swim is an essential skill for water safety. Everybody, especially school aged children, should be taught
to swim and how to stay afloat.
