I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:
a) Define mental illness
b) Explain the differences among the 4 mental illnesses-Major depressive disorder, Bipolar
disorder, Schizophrenia, and Post-traumatic stress disorder
c) Exhibit a realistic and positive understanding of mental illness
1. Preliminaries

4. Abstraction
Today we are going to learn about mental health and
mental illness. Just like being physically ill, persons with
mental illness have symptoms, can seek help, may take
medicine, and can recover.
Mental Illnesses
A. Major Depressive Disorder
It is characterized by “persistent sadness,
despair, and hopelessness” (Donatelle, 2006)
Symptoms of Depression
Lack or loss of motivation
Over thinking (that others may say something
bad about him/her)
Lack or loss of energy
Slow to react
Difficulty in concentrating and remembering
Loss of appetite
Excessive gain/ loss of weight
Withdrawal from others/ feeling alone
B. Bipolar disorder
Also called manic-depressive disorder, it is a “form of
depression characterized by alternating mania and
depression” (Donatelle, 2006)
Symptoms
Rapid speech and racing thoughts
Difficulty in decision-making
Recklessness and impulsiveness
Agitation
Difficulty in concentrating
Extreme irritability
C. Schizophrenia
This is a “mental illness with biological origins that is
characterized by irrational behavior , severe alterations
of the senses and inability to function in the society”
(Donatelle, 2006)
D. Post-traumatic Disorder
A person may have this disorder when he/ she
experienced a traumatic situation such as being abuse,
raped, or involved in an accident.
Symptoms may vary from being spaced out (tulala),
extreme sadness or frustrations, irritability, avoidance to
people or isolation, and others.
5. Application
Identify the signs/ symptoms below. Write A if it is for Major Depressive Disorder, B if it is for Bipolar
disorder, C if it is for Schizophrenia, and D if it is for Post-traumatic Disorder.
