(U) KIDNAPPING UPDATE - NIGERIA: On 22 January, eight crew of Greek tanker HAPPY LADY, kidnapped by Nigerian pirates on 30 December were released. All are reported to be safe and sound. Among kidnapped were Master, Engineers, Officers. (www fleetmon com) 2.(U) ATTACK - NIGERIA: On 21 January, Panama-flagged container ship MSC GRACE reported being attacked near position O4O4N - 005:476, 20'NM south of Bonny. Around 15 armed persons in a speed boat chased and fired upon a general cargo ship underway. Alarm raised and the ‘non-essential crew took shelter in the citadel, The vessel took anti-piracy preventive measures, increased speed and the armed naval guard ‘onboard returned fire, resulting in the skif aborting the attack and moving away. (www sguardian com) 4, (U) ATTACK - BENIN: On 20 January, Marshall slands-flaqged container ship ATLANTIC DISCOVERER reported being attacked near positon (05:08N - 00217, 75 NM south-southwest of Cotonay, Benin. (U) KIDNAPPING UPDATE - NIGERIA: On 19 January, 19 of the 20 seafarers, kidnapped on 15 December from the tanker DUKE, were released. ‘One able seaman (AB) was evidently taken il and died shortly after capture, according to a company pres release: "We are seeking further information fom those crew members that have een released andl a ful rwestigation will be held into the AB's demise.” All the crew who have been released have undergone medical checke and are reported to be well, given the circumstances oftheir ordeal. Malaysian authorities managed to locate the fishing vessel. Three crew were found safe on the vessel ater intial reports stated eight had bbeen kidnapped. The remaining five crew were reported kidnapped.
