“ Access And Its Limits : The Contemporary Library As A Public Space”

I will make a summary of the article I read about access and its limits: The Contemporary
Library as a Public Space. There are 2 words that I consider to be the key words of this journal
discussion, the first is Access and the second is Public Space. Access may be familiar to us as we
know that access can facilitate all activities carrie out by humans but need to know that access
has restrictions, not all things can be accessed, there are some that only able to be accessed by
certain parties such as state archives,etc. But lately developed access in the world of libraries that
are able to facilitate users in getting the information needed. Public space is a place where
anyone can visit, use without any fees such as the town square, a city park in which there is no
limit who has permission to come to the place.

In my opinion, this article discuss the change in function of a library, rather adding a
traditional library function, which initial functions only to read and store collections, but this
article discusses that the library must be able to become a multifunctional public space starting
from its buildings, services, facilities, etc. wich can accessed by anyone without any age
restrictions and certain group, because basically the library is a public space that has one
important function that is currently being intensively developed by libraries in Indonesia,
especially in this malang state university, namely the function is recreation. As we know so far
the library is only a place to do tasks, discuss groups, read books, but now the function of the
library is not just for that change of time also requires the library to follow it because the library
is not only a public space but also as an agency providing information not oriented to profit. In
this case many parties must be involved in the planning process until the evaluation of the library
so that the library can be a multifunctional public access, the following section whose
contributions are needed are architects, interior design experts, technology experts, art experts,
and librarians. The section that I can mention, because in my opinion all the parties that I
mentioned have a big contribution and are very important because if all of these parties can work
together then a public space building will be created by everyone's dream. that's all my summary
